Books 29-32

Mongoose
I'll admit it, one BIG thing that drew me to the mega deals and other items were the claims that we would get these books. Hopefully I don't sound a little too anxious, but I don't think I've heard anything more about them recently and no updates. Personally, and maybe that's just me, I'd rather they get these out sooner than later...I could wait a little longer for the other Lone Wolf books myself (probably since I own all of them already minus the bonus mini-adventures) in lieu of these being worked on and getting done, or at least one or two of them.

Is there any new word on the progress on these. I know Mr. Dever was out of commission for a while and that probably halted a lot of work on them...and if they are no longer able to be completed due to that I can understand that.

I guess I'm just out of the loop on what's going on with these books.

Thanks for any news or updates.

Actually no, book 29 is in final edit with JD. The plan was to release book 29 ahead of the normal run. I thin kthe last interview with JD saw him say they were still working otu the logistics of when to release the books, and how far out of order they wanted the new and old books to be.

Like Beo said, JD is currently completing work on book 29. From what I heard, Mega-Deal buyers might see it this fall, but that is not official at all.

I dunno. I'm sincerely starting to believe that LW books 29-32 are vaporware. The cynic in me even begins to suspect that this was the case all along — just a juicy worm on a hook to boost Megadeal and Collector's Edition sales. They were initially scheduled for the end of 2007. Have you glanced at a calendar lately? Last year they were "still waiting for the manuscript". Now they're "in final edits". You do realize that Book 32 will be out in 2019 if this pace keeps up? (Assuming Book 29 does indeed come out at the end of 2010, which remains to be proven.)

Anyway. Call me a pessimist, but I don't think I still believe we'll ever see these books.

Hi Federico - I am delivering the final manuscript at the end of August. First publication in English will likely be in Dec 2010. Thanks for being so patient. I am sure you will agree that it was worth the wait once you read it. Best regards, Joe.

This is an alleged PM that an Italian fan received on Facebook after asking JD of the status of book 29.

I'll quote Neil Gaiman regarding George R R Martin, and transpose for Magnamund.

Joe Dever is not your bitch.

Things will be done when they're done, have you ever written a book for publication, have you ever had to re-edit a tonne of work for publication and then sit back as an editor works over it as well?

Joe has a lot of work to do between all of his projects, including projects for the MPGB and other things.

Give the guy a break.

It's not Joe Dever I'm trying to diss here. It's the unknown people who advertised these books back in 2007 and led us all to believe that they would be released "soon" — alongside new Banedon gamebooks, rewrites of the original Kai series, multiple novel series ……

Oh, and just for fun, let me shoot your argument down on the spot — I have submitted books for publication, and had them approved and released in way under 3 years. Better luck next time.

"I am delivering the final manuscript at the end of August. First publication in English will likely be in Dec 2010"

You might want to attack Mongoose, but it sounds like its JD that is trying to get the books right, so I can't see how your complaints can be anything but a comment against Joe.

Also, they aren't a set of 'unknown people', given Matt, etc actually post here. Infatc, if you actually want your concerns addressed, why aren't you directly speaking with them, or with Joe through the comminication channels around?

There are e-mail addresses fior Mongoose, I'm sure there are even phone numbers to call for Mongoose. Do you really think the most positive contribution is a snide forum post, so that at the end of a busy day the 'unknown people' get to read it in their spare time, and feel just one more stage disillusioned with dealing with the 'fans'?

Also, if you want to shoot someone's argument 'on the spot', can you at least post links to your actual published works? And also can you tell us how long you worked on the books from the start, since that's part of the three years, not just editing. And also how many projects you were also working on at the same time.

I know it gets in the way of posting simplistic detached arguments and bile, but it might actually get you taken more seriously.

Thanks, you just proved my point perfectly. You really do need to address your concerns to Mongoose Publishing, I suggest a politely written letter or at least some kind of constructive email, or as beo says, no one is going to take you seriously.

I've had books written, accepted, published and done in a shorter time frame for various other companies, however, every company is a different entity. Or to put it in a shorter way.

Your milage may vary.

As for shooting down my comment on the spot, good for you. I'm glad when I can contribute to the ego of a fellow person on the planet, it makes me feel much better inside that I've contributed to someone's self worth in a good way.

"Yeah, you're right," you reply, self-consciously. "I oughta know by now. Better late than dead, right?"
'93', The Omega Zone, Joe Dever.

Or, to put it another way, surely better late than never? Oiseau, my friend, you may indeed be correct with your timeline of publication promised by Mongoose. I understand your frustration but the language you use and the way you go about expressing yourself on this forum is unlikely to win you any friends. Putting comments in bold just makes it worse, like one of my children being petulant & stamping their feet when they can't get their own way. It isn't what you say but the way you say it.

I've said several times before I wanted Mongoose to iron out any bugs before publishing 29+, not only that but it doesn't seem fair to new readers that they will see the end prematurely before knowing what will happen in the first books of the New Order series which I am sure sets up the finale - do we go to the Plane of Light/meet Grey Star/ have to use the Moonstone against Agarash? Plus of course I assume the 'missing fifty' sections in Bk28 will still be published it is possible they will include some item/weapon and/or skill use that would affect your choices and therefore what you carry with you 29+; if 28 comes out way after 29-32 this would spoil it. (My Discipline choice has certainly changed with Mongoose's extended Flight From the Dark.) Do not get me wrong - I am as eager to read what happens as the rest but I've waited this long... I just hope Mongoose don't take the comments personally. 29 is coming - there is a link somewhere to the cover, if Mongoose were never going to release it they sure wasted time and money commissioning an artist to do it. Saying it is a trick to con people into buying the Mega-deal is unhelpful, surely you have experienced projects not meeting their deadlines at some point before in your life? Patience, it's coming...

Too true, considering what Joe went through we're actually lucky the books are coming out at all.

Okay, fine, let's not start a flame war over this. I'll slither back in the shadows and wait like a good little boy.

I can certainly understand frustration.

I collected the original books as they came out. But I'm in the US and after buying up to Book 20, I had just started 17 I think, is when I found out that 20 would be the last one I would see. Years of playing and collecting halted abruptly. It felt like a kick in the crotch. I found out why it happened but that understanding didn't exactly make me feel better.

As I get older I find it harder to get involved (or be patient) with multi-year projects. Same thing with rpg's; splatbook heavy games I'm starting to turn away from because I can't afford to wait years for product. 20 years ago none of this would have caused me to blink an eye but now the thought of how old I might be before I have the entire collection is rather depressing.

Nevertheless, nothing I say or do is going to make things go faster. When I bought the mega-deal I only finally got Book 1 when Book 6 was coming out. I sent out numerous polite letters, admittedly growing less polite as time went buy, and they were always responded to but nothing ever changed.

Almost all of these books get pushed back from their original dates and some don't make the modified date. Book 14 is still listed as a July release but I haven't seen it yet. You can call, write and/or rant but none of it does anything; believe me I wish it would.

We have one option and one option only: wait. I'm not exactly thrilled by the slower-than-originally-promised schedule either but grin and bear it.

I apologise for the tone of my previous post.

I hope you don't feel my commet about bold print was aimed at you; your emphasis was an important quote, as was The Wolf's. I have the utmost respect for you both.

Perhaps Mongoose may keep us all happy with a preview? I was thinking perhaps "The Story so far..." to whet all our appetites?

Come on guys - let's not fight! Think what Joe Dever would think about us?

I think the fact we are going through some difficulties shows how much we care about the books.

I haven't heard much about books 29-32, or the 2nd books in the two novel series, or Book 14 for that matter.

But they will come! Mongoose have taken our money, so they have to

These things do take time - very annoying I know. I mean it's been years. But perhaps it is better to wait for them to be right? We have all complained about the errors in the reprints - imagine if there was an error in Book 29? We wouldn't know about it until it was too late - I mean, we don't have anything to compare it with!

I know none of us here hate each other, or have flame wars - we're just a bit frustrated. Heck I've posted some cross stuff about Mongoose, but to be fair they have done a (mostly) good job. I find errors in stuff by Bantam Books - a huge publisher! And in the best-selling Star Wars franchise at that!

As SnowShadow says, perhaps a quick update from the Goose will help a bit? Don't worry if it's about telling us about some more delays Matt - just a bit of news would be good :D

Not at all. I fired off an angry post last night and was apologising for the tone of it to Oisueu. I understood your meaning, never fear!

On a more happy subject, the Italian fans of Librogame's Land were lucky enough to get exclusive information directly from Joe Dever about the events that took place between the end of book 28 and the beginning of book 29. I did a rough translation of the text:

-5084: After the death of Sejanoz, the army of Chai, led by General Zha-zhing, son of Xo-lin, pushed the Bhanarian back to their homeland and destroy the city of Yua Tzhan (that we visited in book 27). This event is called the Massacre of Yua Tzhan

-5085: Eastern Bhanar is occupied by Chai. Xo-lin's death makes Zha-zhing the new Kea-Khan who marries Mylsha, princess of Mythan. The Bhanarian resistance makes regular attacks on the Chai fortresses on the border between the two countries. A treaty between Chai and Mythan is signed and makes it impossible for any ships to reach the Bhanarian coasts. The resistance is finally defeated.

-5086: The Kea-Khan Zha-Zhing puts Superintendent Klutan on the throne of Bhanar. Klutan is merely a puppet under the order of the Kea-Khan. Chai removes its forces from Eastern Bhanar. Zha-Zhing has a son, Lao Tin.

-5087: King Kardisa of Vaduzhan invades the south-west part of Bhanar. Otavai falls after offering little to no resistance and Kardisa asks the conquered territories to become part of his kingdom. Chai won't resist to this demand.

-5088: The Shianti leave the Isle of Lorn to live with Ishir on the Plane of Light. Their last act on Magnamund is to give the Isle of Lorn to the Kai Order.

-5089: Lone Wolf arrives on the Isle of Lorn. With the help of Grey Star, he prepares plans for a new Kai Monastery on the island. Sultan Zedoli of Shadaki declares the presences of both LS and GS on Lorn as an act of war. Shadaki invades Forlu and Korli but the Lastlands come to their help. LW sends one regiment of Kai Lords and Sommerlund sends three regiments of soldiers in what is known as the War of the Sea of Winds. Shadaki looses the war and gives back the conquered lands. Zedoli is assassinated shortly after.

-5090: Warlord Ranghor kicks the Lencians out of Nyras while King Sarnac is killed. A civil war is declared among the Drakkarim nations as Ranghor and Ghangrim fights to get the control. Meanwhile, construction of the new Kai Monastery on the Isle begins. It will take ten years to be completed. Most of the Grand Masters of the New Order will take part to its construction. Occasional skirmishes between Korli and Shadaki are taking place.

-5091: A great number of Agarashi (between 8,000 and 12,000) emerge from the Darkwall Mounts and invade the Lucien Hills of Siyen. The city of Varedo is destroyed but the Siyenese army counter-attacks and rejects the horde back to the mountains. The Lastlands offer workers to help to the construction of the new Kai monastery. All the incursions from Shadaki in the territory of Korli stopped. King Tor IV rises to the throne of Sommerlund.

-5092: The city of Jaroc, in southern Lunarlia, is attacked and destroyed by another large force of Agarashi (between 7,000 and 10,000) that came for the lands of Naaros. A new war is declared between Eldenora and Delden.

-5093: Again, a large force of Agarashi (between 12,000 and 15,000), coming from the Chasm of Kraknalorg, attacks Mount Vost in Starn. This time though, Boden gives a military aid to the Giants who will break the siege and push back the horde to the Karknalorg. End of the war between Delden and Eldenora.

-5094: Troops on the border of Kasland fight off various attacks of creatures coming from Kraknalorg. In northern Cincoria, various settlements inside the forest are destroyed, again by Agarashi from the Karknalorg.

-5095: Jaraza becomes the new Zakhan in Vassagonia. He signs peace treaties with various Free Lands and formally renounces to any territorial revendications of Cloesia. A record harvest is reported in Sommerlund.

-5096: Magador forms an alliance with Ogia and attack Palmyrion. Talestria comes to the help of its allies and wins the war at the Battle of Luukos.

-5097: Creatures coming of the Danarg invades Talestria, but the are pushed back by the army. King Tor IV marries Princess Larina of Durenor in Holmgard.

-5098: Warmarshall Ranghor supervises the construction of warships under Zeegazad while King Telnac orders the construction of a shipyard in Newton, on the Doun River. The Lencian explorer Paval is captured by the Drakkarim. Archduke Chalamis of Kasland dies in mysterious circumstances. Archduchess Larena takes his place. A new gold seam is found in the south-east part of the Maaken Mines. The King of Sommerlund uses this new gold to increase the number of men in the army and in the navy.

-5099: A conspiracy by the Shadakine empire to destroy the new Kai Monastery on the Isle of Lorn is disrupted by Lone Wolf and the New Order of Kai. Acolytes of Vashna are sighted on numerous occasions in the Stornlands.

-5100: The new Kai Monastery is completed on the fifth day of the year. During the inaugural ceremony, the God Kai appears to Lone Wolf and the Kai that were there. After giving praises and blessings, he warned the New Order that Magnamund would soon face a new attack from the forces of Naar. Lone Wolf goes back to Sommerlund to prepare the Order and sends Red Bear and a group of Kai Aspirants to Talestria (these are the events told in novel The Dragon of Lencia). Meanwhile, contact is lost between Sommerlund and Durenor with Ljuk, in Kalte. Sommlending merchants are expelled from Kalte, with their goods being seized. Two ships from the Commercial Lands of the North that were in Ljuk are attacked by Ice Barbarians who kill all the crew. In the Stornlands, the coty of Amory is besieged and taken by mercenaries companies. King Telnac, informed of the impending attack of the Agarashi, cancel his invasion of Nyras. The Drakkarim interprete this as a sign of weakness and launch a fast invasion of Lencia. After Vadera and Westhaven are razed to the ground, Warmarshal Ranghor claims the throne of Lencia for himself. The commander of the Barbarians of Kalte, Tvor'tana, unifies for the first time all the tribes of the land. He is given the title of Brumalmarc. The fire lake that encircles the ruins of Helgedad extinguishes itself.

-5101: Shortly after the celebration of the Fehmarn, the Chasm of Gorgoron is shaken by earthquakes for weeks. When the earthquakes finally stops, the jungle of Dessi is swarming with Agarashi. The new Brumalmarc of Kalte, Tvor'tana, with the help of the Nadziranim, reopens the Shadow gate under the ice fortress of Ikaya, releasing the powerful Ice Demons. These monsters carried an unnatural winter to Sommerlund and Durenor. The Kaltersee froze over, allowing the Ice Barbarians to invade Sommerlund and Durenor. Lone Wolf, King Tor IV of Sommerlund and King Danan of Durenor lead the armies to a complete victory over the Ice Demons and the Ice Barbarians, pushing them back to their cold lands. The unnatural winter ceased suddenly just as it had begun. Sommerlund suffered from floods for three months before all the snow was melt and the cycle of seasons return to normal. Prince Sarnac, son of Telnac, leads the forces of the Free Lands to liberate Helmstorm from the Drakkarim. He is crowned King of Lencia before leading the armed forces of Helmstorm against a new attack of the Drakkarim at the north gate of the capital. They fought at the Battle of the Valley of Grimstone where Ranghor was defeated when troups from Kasland arrived. In Eru, a scout reports that the Nadziranim of Ghangrim have created a new machine that would destroy all the Free Lands. Back in western Tentarias, the invasion of Darke begins. The city falls under the power of the united forces of Eru, Lencia, Kasland, Boden, and Bor. King Sarnac rename the city Gamir, its old Lencian name. Sarnac continues through Nyras and destroys Kagorst. Suddenly, earthquakes shakes the border of Skaror and the Darklands, at the feet of the Ogshezar Mounts. A new rift, 200 miles deep, opens up, between the ruins of Cragmantle to the abandonned city of Nadgazad. The remote Bhanarian city of Bakhasa is controlled by a Nadziranim. The Maakengorge opens up a little bit more of 25 miles to the West. The eartquake leveled the remains of the city of Maaken and few buildings in Casiorn were still standing after it. Acolytes of Vashna started converging to the gorge.

-5102: Khea-Khan Zha-zhing dies at the age of 58 on the day of the festivity of Fehmarn. His son Lao Tin becomes the new Khea-Khan at the age of 16.
