Big Thumbs Up to Mongoose for Traveller

I was Traveller window shopping on the site, and only just now noticed how massive the MgT Traveller library has become in just under 5 years: 70 books, not even including the LBBs! Add to that PDFs and third party publications, and it's probably closer to 100.

To me, that's amazing and a huge accomplishment. I know that we as customers and fans can be a tough audience at times. But with the RPG market being what it is, not to mention the occasionally fractured nature of the Traveller fanbase, I really thought it was worth taking a moment to give Matt and all the contributors some kudos on this. If I think back to 2008 when this started, I wasn't expecting any more than 4 or 5 releases per year, tops.

Anyway, just a big thumbs up and thanks for keeping the game alive, in print, growing and evolving.

Mongoose definitely deserve some credit here, especially as they've achieved this during some difficult market conditions. It's also worth noting that as a result of the work done by Mongoose, Traveller is more visible in the gaming community now than it has been at any time since the early 1980s.

Especially, I also approve of the 'universe' books. Traveller is a nice and simple rule-set, and things like B5 and Judge Dredd help find other uses for it.

I like the Orbital and Chthonian Stars games using Traveller's rules. Mongoose did good with their ruleset.

I agree that some of the third-party products are excellent. Hopefully if Mongoose release a revised version of the rule system they will also open up some additional subsystems such as vehicle design and cybernetics for third-party publishers to play with, since it looks like moves to update the SRD have been placed on the backburner indefinitely.

Anyone can write books on those things for Traveller. Mongoose doesn't need to make them core rules.

If I didn't like it, I would not have spent over $300 on mong trav in the last year, including the CSC twice! :lol:

I would like unlocked pdf's though, it would make it easier to pull pages out in photoshop.

I think there were about 60 from GDW alone, not even including 24 (?) issues of JTAS. And then there were licensed releases by FASA, Gamelords, Paranoia Press, Judges Guild and others. I think it would be fair to say that it reached to about 120, depending on what you count (like boardgames).

At the very least:

9 LBBs
3 other styles of release of the Core rules
13 Supplements
13 Adventures
8 Double Adventures
8 Alien Books
2 larger Adventures
4+ other (Alien Realms, Atlas of the Imperium, etc.)

That's 60 there for "core releases" over 10 years ('77-'87). And I'm sure I'm missing or miscounting something.

A quick look at the four CT disks from FFE (I was a "CT" guy before moving to mong trav) there are about 300 pdf's of various size, but in files such as big jpg's from FASA ACS series and extras such as a searchable excel index, artwork, etc.; around 600 different files including the pdf's. It isn't the whole catalog of what is out there, nice too in that they are all unlocked; Matt is astute in focusing on an updated system.

Mong should re-do Startown Liberty next. 8)

I agree. Mongoose have done brilliantly to maintain the momentum for Traveller. Add their contribution to d100 with Runequest/Legend, I think they have done more than anyone else to keep the spirit alive.

Nope. Not from me. Traveller is like flavors of pizza or s*@: "Even when it's not great, it's still not bad." And you get more mileage from Traveller.

Since we're all showing our appreciation, I'd just like to say thanks to Mongoose for all their efforts with Traveller. And especially thanks to Mongoose for embracing the OGL and allowing companies like mine to use the rules for our settings!

I do wish the SRD was expanded to include a few more books, but that's a topic for another day. For now, I just want to say "Thanks Mongoose!"

Nope. Not from me. Traveller is like flavors of pizza or s*@: "Even when it's not great, it's still not bad." And you get more mileage from Traveller.

I find it all is compatible with each other so that it becomes more than just the sum of it's parts.
