Best and worst Mongoose Traveller product to date?

Maybe they should just wait for a while and collate all the different pieces of info about the Spinward Marches and then do a reasonably comprehensive 2nd edition, as a hardback? After all, they're going to do an expanded hardback edition of 760 patrons.

What is up with this 2nd ed of Patrons? Why are they doing it? Are they changing the content or something?

Completely re-written, from start to finish.

This edition follows the classic Patron format, with plot hook and alternative developments.

It is also _much_ larger!

I never got the first one but on looking through it quickly it didnt look that different to the original classic version - why the rewrite?

Simply because all the feedback we had said that people wanted the 'clasic' format that provided direct adventure ideas, rather than details on the patrons themselves.

Your wishes being our command, the new book was commissioned!

Huzzar!
I see your Huzzar and raise you a YAY!

As I said, 760 Patrons is probably the Mongoose Book that most disappointed me, as far as in its utility in play.

My criticism of the first edition is is twofold:
1) The NPCs don't have any game stats.
2) They don't have jobs for the players, so they aren't really "patrons" in any meaningful sense.

Yes, a more accurate title would have been: 760 NPC Encounters.

Or just 760 NPC Backgrounds, since there aren't really any written-out encounters either.

Yeah, I have to say that I've enjoyed all the books I've bought in the Mongoose Traveller Line (the main rules, the sector books, the alien books, the career books) and, while I've made some changes to them (something I do to any gaming book really) I've been pretty happy with them.

To me, the one that was totally useless was 760 Patrons.... which really upset me as it was the book I was most looking forward to getting. When I saw, as others have noted, that it was just NPC backgrounds and not patrons at all.... well, I was a bit miffed to say the least.

I'm really looking forward to the proposed re-write.

760 Patrons is a nice book. Lots of NPCs ready to use. I recommend people pick up a copy if they haven't.

Yep. If you want some interesting NPCs its an ok book. However, if you want patrons, well, you'll be disappointed.

So far I own all books published by Mongoose, except the LBBs and 760 Patrons. The latter especially as I found nothing in it I needed.
In general I appreciate all the products, as I only own some of the old german Traveller products (Fanpro's CT translations).
As many others I do find some errors here and there, and some books might be better than others, but overall I find the quality ok.
I get a constant flow of good material and a nice online support. (There are companies out there charging for something like S&P) What more should I ask for?
All games I've played before needed some form of 'user'-editing, not to mention the houseruling inserted in the rulebooks.
Granted, MgT is not full-colour, highglossy paperweights like D&D, but as a serviceman I prefer my rules rugged and simple

I wonder, as its a version rewrite, is MTG providing everyone who bought the original version with a free copy of the new version? Otherwise it seems strange to me that they are completely rewriting the entire book rather than just releasing another completely different one. And so, if I buy the version that is out now, will I get the new one also for free? Not that I would probably do that as I dont want the first one from the sound of it but I was just wondering .. if so they must have a bit of a screwy business model to be able to do that kind of thing !! Cant imagine many people would stay in business long doing that these days. Although with something as select as Traveller I suppose it pays to keep the fans loyal.

No - it is not a version re-write, but a completely different book, one we have been very upfront regarding its arrival.

I for one am quite happy with Patrons 760. I have used at least 5 of them out of there with no problems for what I wanted at the time. As for comparison to the Classic version, I like Mongoose's much better.

Still, I look forward to the new one, hooks always help me get my creativity flowing.
