Beams, dice and maths

(b) Having respect for the dice gods.

That's why Low-Roller berates me so for crying

"I flick a wet towel at the nads of the dice gods!"

Especially when we're playing as a team.

Might explain my crap BEam and Stealth rolls as well

I am born again Dicean now though I dropped £50 on dice at Dragonmeet SW, I shall now serve and respect the dice gods.

If you are worried about extreme results for beams, you can go all the way. Ultimately the average number of hits per beam AD is

=Σ(1/2^n) from 1 to infinity. The math gives that 1 hit per AD. So for each AD roll on this table

1 - roll normal dice with -1 on the first round
2 - one hit per AD
3 - one hit per AD
4 - one hit per AD
5 - one hit per AD
6 - roll normal dice with +1 on the first round

you'll still get the full miss and the devastating hit from time to time but most of the time you'll just have an average number of hits.

or you could just say that all beam weapons hit equal to their AD - no need to roll!

I was working up to that. Shields are already the first step on the way there

But arguing for reducing the standard deviation of the results from beam AD makes sense.

Having a battle decided when a white star closing blast doors hits 6 times or when the slow loading brakiri 5 AD beam hits once can be annoying (almost as annoying as losing when you recieve a 6-6 crit).

I'm not sure if this has been covered yet, but I doubt it considering the math-orientation of most people on this thread:

Whether there is a difference depends on your skill at throwing dice.
"But they're random!"

Auhm. Not entirely. HOW you throw dice Will affect their outcome. How you Hold them prior to the throw will affect the outcome.
If you know what you're doing, you can purposely skew the results. You can't get 6s Every single time, there Is still an element of randomness, but pointing it in the general direction you want is relatively easy.

Doing so with gobs of dice in your hands, however...
I've never seen anyone accomplish that. Not with more than 3 or 4 dice and most can't do it with more than 2 (they practice it for their Craps games).
This is because, as was stated about mechanics in the first response, when the dice are rebounding from each other it reduces the effects of your hand movements and how you hold the dice before throwing.

This is why Yahtzee uses a cup.
