Beach Assault Game ...

We played the Beach Assault scenario last night and had great fun ... we played in 15mm (2700 points) and it was a hard grind for the USMC as can be seen below:
The view from the Landing craft, Amtracs up each side.

The Japanese Command look out from their cave/bunker

The Japanese didn't open up so as to keep their emplacements 'hidden' from fire...

The US commander made the mistake of using the Amtrac as an assualt vehicle though ... my zero honed in ..

Only to suddenly realise (we had not played air forces in a game up til this point) the power of a 20" reaction (when they had had nothing else to fire at) from 2 amtracs, one sherman and the Landing craft brimming full of 50 cal AA ... oops... we decided to use a suggestion of the forum and have the crash happen in a random direction ... right on top of one of my foxholes ... luckily the troops survived (they obviously hit the bottom of the bunker as the crashing zero was heading for them

The US advanced steadily with the Japanese HMGs on the crest firing down on them, the rest of the Japanese infantry were about to open up when I called in an arty strike on the advancing marines ... ok 10" deviation with me returning it for 1" ... MY artillery took out another foxhole ... again luckily a lot of the troops survived (due to a lack of 4+ throws from my opponent rather than my saving). The HMGs and greandiers were managing to pin some of the marines though.

That's when the USAF arrived ... and me with no AA (oops)

Then the marines started doing what they do best ... clearing out the bunkers
IMG_0028.jpg

The survivors and a nearby tankette managed to suppress them so it was time for a lunge attack on the Sherman ...
IMG_0031.jpg

With only a few turns to go in the game the Marines had to risk it ... the Sherman and the airforce started taking out the tanks
IMG_0034.jpg

There advance was met with a couple of banzai charges (our first real CCs in the game, one round the flank did well

One up the center could have gone better

The Japanese had managed to keep both US artillery spotters pinned down or having to stay in cover for most of the game which had meant the US had not been able to use their large amount of artillery available ... once the Japanese were more open and firing this changed

However it was really too little and too late ... the marine platoon was basically decimated and while the Japanese had taken about the same amount of casualties they were mainly still in their bunkers and got a lot of victory points.

It had been a great game and we both learnt quite a bit about how the rules played ... it is going to be hard to win with the US in this scenario but that's my task for tonight!
