Bay question

Mongoose
A 50ton bay states it can fire a group of 12 missiles or a group of 3 torpedoes (double that for a 100 ton bay)

A torpedo barbette states that it can hold 2 torpedoes. Does this mean a 50ton bay can hold 20 torpedoes?

How many missiles and how many torpedoes can be held in the bay itself?
The rules do not say. They only say how many can be launched at once.

Thank you for any clarifications.

This is one of those issues in the rules where the size of an item doesn’t seem to make sense, rather than the size given must also include the space/cradles/racks/hoists, etc… to store each and every torpedo.
It’s the same way a 40 cubic meter vehicle, actually equals 10 tons of space on a deck plan (in the instance of a G-Carrier)… might be a little off on the Cubic meters… going from memory…
(When I say “box” I’m talking about one square on a deck plan that is 1.5x1.5x2 meters high, 2 boxes = 1 ton)
If you look at a deck plan, 2.5 tons is a room 2x3 “boxes”, that is also a full 2 boxes high. Or 1x5 box long area, but that would also be 2 boxes high.
Somehow I don’t think a Mongoose Torpedo is a big elongated shoebox flying through space. I see it as 1.25 meters in diameter and maybe 6 meters long at best. The rest of “tonnage” left over is the a fore mentioned cradles/racks/guide rails, loading machinery, etc…
So maybe the 20 torpedoes also includes the space for the launching mechanisms etc…?

The barbette takes up 5 tons, and holds 2, meaning that there's no extra space there either. I suspect that we're going to have to assume that the mechanism for the launcher, or the magazine in the case of extra ammunition, is included in the 2.5 tons.

A Torpedo (or missile for that matter is not as big as listed. Yes that is the volume it occupies were it a cubic shape. Since it is unlikely to be the volume is as long, wide and deep and the longest, widest and deepest parts of the torpedo which leaves lots of room.

In terms of a bay launcher mechanism. Well look at vertical launch bays on modern ships, all the missiles are sitting there ready to launch, the doors open and they launch. In the case of a Traveller Bay weapon you need a gauss system or compressed gas to throw the thing clear of the ship before its drive ignites.

The only really bulky items are going to be the reloading system to bring in fresh torpedoes from a magazine.
