Battlefield Evolution: Open Content

Hi guys,

Some decisions have been made on this project - take a trip to Planet Mongoose to get the lowdown!

Interesting.
It should prove popular for all the budding game designers among us.
Will this open content licence include electronic games?
I'm currently making a BFE Vassal mod.
But what if i make a WAW,ST or Modern combat vassal mod?
Could i sell that?
I know Vassal allows open content too.
Is VAS open content too?

Have you considered taking a more pro-active approach to Vassal with Mongoose games?
The ACTA mod has proven very popular and all other Mongoose games could be given the same treatment.
You could include a free online version of a game when people purchase your Mongoose products.
Vassal server provides the online compability free.
It would certainly give Mongoose an interesting edge in the market.
VAS from the little i've read is perfect a for a Vassal mod.
All the mods could be like Vassal ACTA, counters and stats but no rules and users are informed that they need the 2E rulebook from Mongoose to play.
An example:
"Modern Combat!" from Mongoose publishing. Includes a free online game so you can play anybody from around the world!.

A lot of questions!

>>>Will this open content licence include electronic games?

By default, no. They will need a separate licence.

>>>But what if i make a WAW,ST or Modern combat vassal mod?
Could i sell that?

Avoiding the fact that computer games would need a separate licence, you could not release anything specifically labelled as being for BF Evo: World at War or BF Evo: Modern Combat - those are our copyrights and are not Open. However, you could easily release something called 'German Armour of the Eastern Front', for example, and have the BF Evo logo prominently displayed. No doubt then what it is for and, because we are insisting the core rules are immutable, the compatibility is guaranteed.

>>>Is VAS open content too?

An interesting thought, isn't it? :) No, VaS isn't Open, and will likely remain that way for some time to come.

>>>Have you considered taking a more pro-active approach to Vassal with Mongoose games?

We have, and would very much like to run sponsored events, direct people from the web site into online games, and so on. However, this is a pure manpower issue. Once we have a few more projects put to bed, we'll look into this.

>>>VAS from the little i've read is perfect a for a Vassal mod.

I don't disagree!

Thanks for the reply.
How about free non-profit adaptations of Mongoose publishing products?
I had intended to post the BFE mod on Vassal's homepage for download.
I was gonna include the free basic rules and cards in the mod.
Obviously it would have included directions to Mongoose publishing and references to future products like WAW and Modern C and acknowledgment of Mongoose copyright etc.
Any objections?

Edit, by Mongoose products i mean Mongoose created products. I understand how any vassal works of B5 or ST could prove a legal headache for Mongoose.

Normally, we would have no problem with this. However, the whole point of an Open licence is that it gives a framework for all sorts of publications - we would find it very difficult to go ahead with Open Content, if there were also various 'exceptions'.

So, in this instance, I am afraid we would have to say no.

So have there been any miniatures company so far interested in making Modern Warfare models?

We have been contacted by a couple for licensing purposes. However, with the advent of Open Content, anyone is free to make miniatures for the game, without paying us a penny!

And they would still get an official BFEVO logo on their model packages??

So these miniatures companies that have contacted you, are they actually willing or at least planning on making up-to-date infantry/vehicle models complete with present day gear and equipment?

I am afraid I cannot answer that.

While Mongoose is using the term 'Open Content', it doesn't mention the actual license that will be used. Will you use the OGL, and if not, why not?

The reason I ask is that if you don't release it under the OGL, it isn't compatible with the OGL. So combining these two would not be possible. I personally would find it interesting to look at the possibility of using the EVO rules for a fantasy miniature game. Using the OGC IP from WotC would be very usefull.

I think your making a big mistake regarding Vassal and not using it to promote your products.
But its your game.
:)

The problem is that if you allow a Vassal Mod you effectively give out the Core Rules, something Mongoose (understandably) does not want to do (that soon), as they earn their money with the books not miniatures (as i.e. Specialist Games does).
So it's somehow sad but understandable.

The cores rules won't be included in Vassal mods.
Like the ACTA mod, counters with stats.
And your advised to purchase the rulebook from mongoose to play.
