Battle Report - Aldershot Tournament

Da Boss

Mongoose
Well, all in all a great day :)

Gregs Crew - Greg (obviously), me, Kenny and Clanger set of at some ungodly hour of the morning for sunny but chilly aldershot. The Games Shop was the venue - excellent it was too - great facilities (if a but noisy when Game Room 2 (!) was filled with many excited B5 gamers).

After a good Breakfast at the local cafe we began 8)

Tank and all involved put a lot of hard work and and it showed:)

1pt Armegdeon

My fleet

Primus, Liati, Dargan, Balvarin (4 sentri, 4 Razik), Maximus (of course), Kutai, 2 Haven
on to the games:

Game One _ A great Start - Narn vs Centauri (what could set the day off more - "First one to die loses" :) 8) )

he had - 3 G'lan, 2 G'Karith - nice to face a fleet wiht the same range beams as me and only partially F arc. Short description - I had "stupid" beam / critical rolls - (3 x 6,6) and he did not. A fun and veyr good natured opponent who took it all in his stride and we had a enjoyable time watching the Centauri carve up his ships.

Game Two - Neil and his Minbari
3 Tinashi (?) and 2 Leshath

DID not look forward to this - 36 " of clear table between me and his fleet and although I jumped my Liati in behind his ships - they were firmly enscounced in a dust cloud. My fleet was sliced to bits as it approached and karma played its part as Neils beam and critical rolls were scarily good - like mine in the first game. Killed a Nial and nearly killed a Tinashi. As ever a good game against Neil - a skillful opponent who deserved his place as tournament winner!

Game Three - Hash and his two young Shadow ships - Assassination

Despite my stating we had no grevaince with Mr Mordens friends the game began - a bit cat and mouse with the asteroids in the centre which became more open when the 2nd Shadow ship shimmered in. The Shadows were on good form and sliced a ship up when they fired (as they should do 8) ) but I began to wear them down with Havens, Maximus and the Primus - the stupid Liati couldn't hit anything with its beam and its other guns were just about OK. One Shadow ship was sent adrift before being finshed off by the Primus and Liati. Rightly outraged the 2nd ship sliced the Primus in twain and then in the next turn killed the damaged Liati. Another great game and opponent and I went home happy :)

the last game was notable for my 14 crew criticals - none of which did anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was playing Minbos - oddly enough identical fleet to TGT.

3x Tinashi, 2x Leshath - probably because we were both expecting to face off against other minbari.

We faced off against each other in the first game, as it happened. Unfortunately after having to roll off 3 times for the setup and winning, I proceeded to lose /every/ initiative turn. Neil kept his Tinashis squadroned and managed to cut up one of mine a turn, and eventually took the whole lot out. Even only needing to roll 1+ or 2+ to see through stealth, I couldn't catch a break with damage. Best I did was to roughly half kill a Tinashi.

End result: 25-0 loss

Game 2
vs. Nick's Drazi

Well, without any scouts, Nick was facing an uphill battle on this one. I held a Leshath off and attempted to jump point bomb on turn 1. Then held it open for a turn and hopped it in behind him, whilst redirecting fire with the other Leshath. Learned from Neil and kept my Tinashis squadroned - and effectively killed the Battle and War level Drazi in three turns (crippled both in turn 1 and 2, killed both in turn 3). Then turned my attention to the rest.
Nick couldn't catch a break and managed to fail every single stealth roll in the game, bar two, where he only managed to launch missiles - which did a sum total of about 10 damage to a Tinashi. Far more damaging was when a fireraptor exploded in the Tinashis face, and managed to cause a 6/6 crit on it - happily still not enough to cripple it!

25-0 win.

Last game, vs. ISA (4 whitestars, 4 whitestar scouts) commanded by Clanger.

Entered this game with some trepidation - it was assassination, which meant trouble for one of my Tinashis. Also, four scouts had me nervous - especially since the stupid 2e rules mean no re-direction for beams.
Clanger couldn't catch a break on initiative this time round - lucky for me. His 4 whitestars started off the board, and I held off a Leshath. We both attempted JP bombs and failed. Anticipating this, I had held my squadron of Tinashis in a corner of the table, right on the edge. I sat there on all stop for 2 turns trying to force him to fly on and past me - and box his WS into the corner facing my guns - this worked, and I managed to pretty much cripple two whitestars whilst his scouts took as long to cross the table. My Tinashi took a bit of a beating in the 8 inch crunch, and went down on turn 4 costing me a big chunk of VPs.
Clanger made the daring move of throwing a crippled whitestar in to skindance on the target Tinashi - blowing it apart.

I then lost a Leshath to a massive stream of damage from a lucky spot by a whitestar (in a dust cloud too!) where he managed 9AD of beam, before crits - the Leshath went boom.
He did run his Nials against one of my Tinashis at one point (all 3 died) the other one lost to one of my Nials in a dogfight.

We ended on turn 10 - but I was popping a Whitestar and damaging another each turn - on crew attrition and two lucky immobilisations I finally won, wiping out all of them (also a few lucky cripplings that cost some WS dodge or self repair).

20-5 win.

Overall review: Tinashis work better in squadrons - bit of a no brainer. Leshaths may have been a bit of a waste given the inability to re-direct nearly all my fleet firepower. Somewhat handy for the minbo opponents but not for the rest.
And I've said it before, but again - twin-linked MB armament is what makes the Tinashi one of the best battle options in the game. This, rather than the beam armament, won the games. 24AD of forward minibeams, before the 12AD of beams of the squadron - you can tear ships apart, and then you've got pretty tasty side and rear arcs too - brilliant (and really hurt those whitestars).

Well you could say your dice were stupid and that really sums up my first game. I thought after that my luck would turn it did for the worse.

Next i faced a fleet comprising of 4 omelos, 2 jakashar scouts, ochlavita ki, and 3 targrath. I managed to survive the opening slavo of missiles so positioned myself in a nice place to capitalise on the lack of a large chunk of his firepower; all i had to endure was endure a few bolters. These bolters did 54 damage with one go and it all got worse from there with my lack of being able to capatilise, atrocious beam rolls another 25-0 loss.

Game three i faced burger. This was the quickest game i had all day. I decided to keep a g'lan in hyperspace and cam in just to the side of him. All i had to do was take one beam volley and his dice had been bad all day so i thought i would be fine. The g'lan went pop. I didn't even bother to work out how many over it was. I think it was about 30 over. Then some arcs disappeared in my ships and more of my ships. I did however take one of them with me.

I came joint last with another bloke from the very club i go to. Great that makes Yeovil gaming club look good doesn't it. I think i took something like 7 6-6 crits all through the 3 games. In hindsight a bin tak may have been better instead of 2 of those g'lans but with that many crits it would have been cut to shreds.

Great day out though.

And so it was that botht he EA players Court Jester faced were lamenting the poor performance of their beam attacks.

And so it came to pass that Court Jester would be the recipient of continualy HUGE and brutal beam attacks...

:P

I did consider taking 12 Deoms but I thought that might incite a few people to rage... So my fleet for the day:

2 Balvarins (only really needed one I think)
2 Sulusts (I'm not feeling them right now... beam/precise just doesn't cut it)
2 Centurion (named Macro and Cato... I am loving this ship more and more each time I use it. Great 360 firepower)
1 Elutarian (this was the ships first outing and it was poor one. It was destroyed in the first beam attack of the second game, It had its fore arc knocked out on a Vital systems hit from its first damage in game 3. Game 1 it fired one missle salvo before being destroyed by somthing Dilgar-like.)
2 Demos (sadly these were the best perfroming ship in the fleet... I think I only lost on in all three games unlike all the other ships that died multiple times.)

Game the first: was very close against Dilgar. We went to time and I lost on VP's due to a Jashakar docked with the objective. Although I was in quite a commanding possition at the end of the game I forgot about the bonus VP from the space station... d'oh

Game the second: Great game against Earth Alliance this but it just wasn't to be... huge tripple damage and double damage beam hits took whole ships out of the game and my wondeful Beam/Pricise attacks batted the EA around like a playful kitten. Truely hull 6 and interceptors are the Centauri bain...

Game the third: This one was against EA Crusade... The game started rather badly for the EA with their jump point scattering off the table leaving all ships stranded in Hyperspace. The rules do not cover what happens if a jump point scatters off the table and in an effort to stop the game being a non-event for the EA chap I suggested he just try again next turn.

The game was a real bloody fight in the end with most ships on the table taking lots of damage. The second jump point wasn't too successful either. It scattered in front of my fleet which promptly went on all stop waiting for the arrival of the EA ships.

If any of the players atthe event takes umbrige with my posting of these images please let me know and I;ll take the offending picture down.

I don't think there was a single paper fleet at this event... that made me happy.

The tourney was great fun today... managed to excel myself by choosing possibly the cheesiest fleet there but not winning the event, which was karmic retribution at it's finest :D

I've never played using the ISA before, but had some experience using Liatis with my Centauri and found them good fun to use, so I asked to borrow TGT's fleet (Thanks mate!) and see how they turned out... as expected, they're extremely hard hitting and effective (especially when combined with a few init sinks...)

ISA fleet with Narn allies:-
3 Whitestars
4 Whitestar IIs
1 T'Rakk
4 Sho'Kovs

The first game I played was against Poi's Dilgar (4 Omelos, 3 Targraths, Oclavita Ki, 2 Jeshakars). He played well, and managed to take out a Whitestar and two Sho'Kovs, but the combination of incredible speed and agility from the ISA when allied with Narn init sinks are very hard for the Dilgar to face off against. In the end, a combination of big beam hits and pulsar fire saw the Dilgar fleet off. 25-0 win.

Second game was against Ken's Dilgar (Mankat, Wahant, Kartrik So, Oclavita Ki, 2 Jeshakars) and I lost two Whitestars while managing to destroy his fleet... again, the speed and firepower of the fleet combined with some *very* lucky dice on my part managed to see me through the game despite the valliant efforts of my opponent. 25-0 win

The last game was against Ad's Whitestar hunting Centauri fleet (3 Liatis, Balvarin, Corvan, 4 Havens). This was a very tight game... I managed to take the early advantage by destroying one of the Liatis (my assassination target) on turn 1, and only lost 1 Whitestar in reply.

Things got messy for me in turn two, as while Ad merrily destroyed practically all of my Narn init sinks, I only blew up two of his Havens despite having all 6 remaining Whitestars pointed at them... not good. The game was close in turn 2 and 3, as we finished off each other's small ships, leaving Ad with 2 Liatis and a Balvarin against 4 surviving Whitestars. Eventually, I lost all of my fleet after taking down one of the remaining Liatis with a jammy pulsar shot.

Final result, 0-25 loss...

I don't think I'll be playing as the ISA again in the near future, I've had my moment and will be going back to using slower, lumbering stuff (probably my Brakiri or Crusade EA next time I go to a tourney as I have yet to give either a run out in an event)

Well I was in a "less paperwork is good" mood, so I took 4x Shantavi ;)

Game 1 against Greg's Psi Corps, I started in one big squadron and popped the Omega before it would even get a shot off. Good start, I thought. But then came the fighters with their psychic dodge and started critting me to death... then came 2x Hunters behind me. I de-crewed the mothership (great mini conversion!) and boarded it for double VP, and I did manage to take out the weapons of one Hunter with a vital systems crit, then board it so I didn't need to waste my weapons on it, but it wasn't quite enough and the other Hunter killed me off. Of course it didn't help that my stealth rolls sucked and Greg's were really good :P

Game 2 against Jim's Minbari, well this was quite predictable really. Minbari with Leshaths against Minbari without. 2 Troligans jumped in behind me... well they tried... they opened their JPs right behind me so I all stopped  Next turn they had to over-fly and I could at least get a couple of shots in while they opened up with their rear and side arcs. He killed one Shantavi per turn, but I managed to at least take one Troligan with me.

Game 3, #1 Bear's Narn now this is actually one of the races I thought I'd do well against! No pesky stealth. When a G'Lan appeared in front of me I was a little worried but his lack of scouts meant I could happily blow it away in one turn (triple damage 6-6 crit - nasty!). 2 of my ships jumped in behind his other 2 G'Lans and it was just a few turns before they were full of holes.

Thanks for reminding me, I must get onto rulesmasters so I can get a clear answer on that one ;). Was a great game nonetheless and as said was really really brutal with both fleets taking some fairly major losses and what was left on both sides HEAVILY damaged. And as I'm sure you've heard from many people, your fleet was a sheer joy just to LOOK at :D

Also as a nice change as Court Jester mentioned, I'm pretty sure the only things anyone represented with counters were fighters with everything else being nicely represented with nicely painted miniatures :) Personally I find that makes everything so much more fun :)

Tourney was fun - Reaverman even you would have had fun I think :)

It was great for me as Shadows (two Shadow Ships (younger)) as TWO of the three games (Capture the Space Station, Space Superiority, Assassination) we played allowed me to put ships in Hyperspace (although it was ruled that I had to have at least one ship on the table...technically Burger pointed out that Hyperspace mastery means I don't have to!)

First game: I played ISA (8 Whitestars)...forgot who the player was but he was a very good sport - excellent opponent. He beat me easily though :( - there was terrain but it was very small and it didn't provide cover (WS could easily move around and still shoot me). Only chance was to enter the asteroid field and hope that added Stealth would help...it didn't lol, I was slaughtered! Total game time approx 20mins...at least I had time to check out the cool things on sale at the Games Shop!

Second game: On account of my "zero" points I got to play Tank who was filling in for Hiff (his car died and so was stranded in the Northern 'wastelands' of England...plus his visa to civilisation may have expired ;)) with the least competitive fleet in the game (Early Era EA 3 x Orestes, 1 x Nova, 2 x Artemis)...on top of this the scenario allowed for 1 of my ships to Hyperspace in. This was also a slaughter but this time I did the killing...I think Tank only managed 1 shot at me in the entire game - woo hoo! Game time approx 30mins...

Third game: This was the only close game I played (and hence actually by far the most fun). I played against Da Boss's Centauri (Octurion, Dargan, Liati, Balvarin, Haven Patrol Boat (2), Maximus..boatload of Rutarians and Sentri from what I remember). It was a cat and mouse game (I'm not sure which was which) but plenty of terrain allowed me to get the positional advantage. I whittled down Da Boss fleet, helped by some poor rolling on his part both in terms of hits and crits (he got his fair share of crits but the were almost ALL crew crits!). It was very close to the last turn with one shadow ship dead and the other one with approx 40% hits remaining but eventually I won out...but it could have gone either way though (especially if the Liati had scored a few more beam hits) - excellent game and excellent opponent. Game time approx 2 hours!

There was a surreal moment when Poi shushed everyone in the room to silence to announce that Mongoose had posted the release of the new Hyperions and bases (dude linking your Mobile to the MGP website is not cool! ;) only joking) which was great news but given that we were all a little downhearted that Mongoose had announced production was ceasing at the end of the financial year the mood was that of indifference as opposed to excitement really!

Overall, great Tourney with a friendly atmosphere - congrats for TGT for his cheesy Minbo fleet ;) and also Adam (who had the same admiralship points but lost out on no. of ships lost overall) for his Centauri - Liati heavy (ISA killer) fleet.

For those of you that live locally to the Game Shop in Aldershot (or even those that just happen to be visiting) we play B5 every other Sunday (Sentient Rabbits crew) and I'd really like to get a campaign going on if we can get enough players...hopefully see you there!

HEY, my car didn't die... it was taken off me by work!
Glad Tank played, I am sure he did a fantastic imitation of my naffness! ;-)

Thankfully, this was the worst moment of my day. I managed to reverse this for my two games vs the Narn Regime, using the Dilgar Imperium's speed and maneuverability to flip G'Lans and G'Quans onto their backsides.

Long time since I posted but may as well make a battle report for Saturday.

Drazi

1xFireraptor
1xStormfalcon
1xFirehawk
1xSolarhawk
2xGuardhawk

Not my usual tactic of Strikehawk's times 1 billion with maybe a Stormfalcon or Nightfalcon for good measure. Which is really what I should of done while the Fireraptor has lots of weapons and even forward arcs I fell it is severely undergunned at War level, it has nothing to do with it's actualy forward arc and boresight weaponry but anyone with a brain lets it close in on them and fire after which they just avoid it like hell and you can't really get a decent shot off afterwards. This is the same with most Drazi ships but at least with those there are multiples and you actually get more fire power for your money 2x Stormfalcon has more hit points than a Fireraptor, more firepower, more fighters and most importantly are two ships so you can get them to work togther. That's just my personal opinion on it and I knew it coming into the tournament I just wanted to give it a go.

1st Battle Vs Ken's Dilgar

I've only fought the Dilgar once but seen them fight a couple of times and it nice to see them used well. While I got a collosal shot off from the Solarhawk in the first round of firing and a couple of good ones with a Solar Cannon afterwards that was pretty much it for the game and they slowly wipped me out. To be honest I split my fire up way too much and went for the big ships when I could of nuked the smalled ones alot more quickly so really my fault for loosing that one.

2nd Battle Vs Alexb83 Minbari

Read his post for a better report but simply put I've had games of ACTA go bad in the past this was by the worst. Not rolling 4+ stealth when all your solar cannon's(4 of them) are in range was pretty much the crux of the story with only my millsile rack firing twice I was bearly able to do any damage to him. It's not an experience I really want to remember quickly and while the stealth rules have changed I'd still like to to see some semblence of a chance of hitting somebody with stealth in return games where you don't make stealth are boring and depressing.

3rd Battle Vs. Tank's EA

This battle really showed the inadquecies of my fleet even with my Firehawk dodging left right and center a few bad beam shots really meant not as much damage should of been done with 1 or 2 hits per shot (yeah there were a couple of good ones but they really were outweighed by the bad ones). The beams rules in my opinion are a little two random yeah they can explode and do horrific damage but they also have a tendency to fail spectaculary. Still it was a close fight but the poor choices I had made in selecting my fleet meant that while I was in it for a short time eventually he had more firepower than me killed my paper thin initiative sinks leaving a fireraptor to try it's best but fail spectaculary.

Really enjoyed myself though all day but I did learn one thing that while Solar Cannon are big and shiny they don't really make up for a Sky Serpent attached to a rock hard Skirmish level ship with two weapons.

Game 1 vs Burger

Burger's Shantavi's came straight at my Omega and Mothership while my Hunter's flanked him around the asteroid field. One of my Shadowcloaks tried to enetr the asteroid field and take the space station and BOOM!

The Hunters performed well and Burger's ships suffered from a lack of all-round fire. He boarded my decrewed mothership and then my crippled Hunter, but not before I finished him off.

Game 2 vs Digger

Digger is always a pleasure to play. His G'Quans came at my Omega and mothership and Omega three abreast. And my hunters came out of hyperspace behind them.

His emines quickly destroyed a scout and damaged the mothership, but once they were fired, I wasn't worried. His Dag'kar did finish the mothership, but not before my hunters ripped his fleet apart from the rear.

Digger's dice rolling was very poor which was a contributing factor.

Game 3 vs TGT

TGT's three Tinashis and two Leshaths just dismantled my fleet. The Omega did not get a shot off. My hunters jumped in on his rear but his twin-linked minibeams whittled them away. I struggled with stealth early on, while he didn't miss a stealth roll even when his Leshath's didn't scout.

----
I was a bit leary about the 1pt Armageddon breakdown before the event. Instead of the feared 8 raid-level ships or 12 skirmish ships that I feared facing, the potent fleets were the three uber battle-level ships - three Tinashis, 3 Liatis or the like. Maybe next time I'll take three Hunters.

Had a good day with my ISA fleet. As normal I enjoyed the tourney :D. Win or lose I enjoyed every game.

My fleet 4 WS and 4 WS 2's

1st Game. vs Hash and his Youngster Shadow Ships. Won that quickly due to some excellent criticals.

2nd Game. Got ripped a new one by Adams Centauri (3 blooming Liatias :x ... mumbles something about accurate guns ) and a Haven boarding my adrift White Star.

3rd Game. Played Alex with his Minbari combo. "Honourable" Bone heads hiding in the corner :D . It was a close game and very enjoyable (especially when i beamed a Leshath in 1 shot ...go me).

Thanks to Mr Tank and Co for a great day and hopefully many many more are to follow.

I think it works quite well in tackling the 'swarm' fleet but it does work better in the old 1e point split. Glad it wasn't seen as too broken :)

The 1pt armageddon split was a funny one - I have to say I might've taken Vorlons, if it hadn't been for the restrictions on fleet selection for them (and their abysmal performance in their last game).

The fact that you can't choose a spread of ships over all of your PLs without losing FAPs really hurts, and they really do need to have transports on the table, IMO.

Maybe for the doubles tournament...

I mustv admit it was the only minor thing I would have changed:

2 points War (with a max limit on ships that could be taken)

I'd have probably taken Shadows then - 1 Youngster and 4 Scouts :)

Sadly the Shadows are not really viable in the doubles torunament either - 5 skirmish  so two Scouts or a Stalker - and 4 fighters (great, well thats a skirmish point wasted) :(

All in all a good day out! :D

I wasn't going top bring my Dilgar Boyz after seeing so many peeps opting for Minbari and ISA on the forum, but then Tank accused me of a lack of commitment to the cause, so that decided it!

Fleet was:- 1 Mankhat, 1 Wahant, 1 Kahtrik So, 1 Ochlavita Ki and a couple of Jashakar Scouts...
I brought out the big guns instead of going for more ships, and this really cost me in the 2nd game...

Game 1 was against Nick's Drazi, and it could have gone either way. 1st turn we both advanced towards each other, I wanted to get the Mankhat's 20 dice of Triple damage torpedos in range, Nick wanted to get stuck in with his entire fleet!
With my scouts unable to re-direct traffic, the lack of re-rolls meant that out of 20 dice, a mere 3 hit! To make matters worse, his Skirmish level Firehawk opened up with the Solar Cannon doing 30+ points of damage to my War ship!
However, as he admitted, he diversified his target selection too much, and though all my big ships were severely hurt, he only managed to finish one off... and by this time, the Dakka Dakka goodness of my bolters had wreaked havok with his fleet... final result 25-0 to the Dilgar 8)

Game 2 was the complete opposite, my slow moving, lumbering hulks against Jim's cheesey  ISA fleet. JPB killed one of my scouts in the 1st turn, and the two squadrons of WhiteStars (3 in one & 4 in t'other) proceeded to dance around my behemoths dishing out beamy goodness at will... Jim, as is usual for such a nice fella, was apologetic for ripping my boys apart, but I have to say that he was due some revenge against my Dilgar, as his EA and Narn have been the recipients of some poundings in the past!
Always a good game fella, and I look forward to the next encounter... :D

Game 3 saw the Dilgar against a Crusade era fleet, and I have to say that the luck that had ebbed and flowed in the previous two games, was definitely flowing through me this time. Despite getting Boresight a couple of times against my bigger ships, the 2 Marathons and the Omega just couldn't get much above a couple of hits, and my scouts crews, after being so crap in the 1st game, barely failed to get re-directs this time round... so, many re-rolled bolter shots, with a few crits on top, was what made all the difference. The fella I played wore a Punisher top, but my apologies for not remembering his name... he was a nice chap though, which can be said about everyone at the tourney... (well, except Tank obviously... and me! )

Well done bunnies! Nice one 8)

Setting it at raid PL would be the only way to make Vorlons usable (for their whole fleet list in any case).

Strangely no restrictions on buying up PLs, but when it comes to buying down you're boned, as you can't skip those gaps in your fleet list!
