Mongoose
Recently I decided to check out WWI Naval games. I was hooked by Avalanche Press Great War at Sea serries. They are very nice games on their own. I would like to venture out and use them to play the strategic campaign and minis for the tactical combat. If nothing else they are a great resurce for historical scenarios and Oob.

One particular action that always intrigued me was ADM Von Spee's Cruiser squadron and the battle of the Falkland's in Dec 1914. When I was a kid a friend of mine had a Falkland's game that had the 1914 campaign as well as the 1980 war.

Wiki history of the 1914 battle:

I decided to make my first WWI 1/2400 purchase from Panzeschiffe. They arrived quickly and I am happy with the results for the price.

I tokk some time while the weather was crudy and painted my first fleets which are now ready for action.

* I Just noticed I have a typo on my SMS Leipzig ;)

Now the question is what rule set to use? I own AoD, but I am concerned about the lack of support i.e pre-made ship data sheets. I have seen other sets out there that come with nice electronic databases of ship data.

Convince me why I should stick with AoD. I have yet to play it, but have played VaS and like that.

And on HMS Carnarvon. ;)

Nice models, though!

There's a preview of AoD on Mongoose's website:
http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/pdf/vasaodpre.pdf

This preview actually includes part of a scenario for the Battle of the Falklands as well as some examples of ship data including the Invincible class battlecruiser, so it is reasonable to hope that the full book covers the battle properly. You could always contact Matt Sprange by e-mail or PM and ask directly for confirmation.

The Falklands is one of the scenarios in AoD (although the Carnarvon is missed out - annoying as it was my grandfather's ship).
I don't recall the Bristol being present during the battle, but the Canopus did take part from Port Stanley harbour....
The book also contains Coronel, Dogger Bank, and an action in the Black Sea between the reflagged Goeben plus supports and the Russians

We've refought Coronel and Falklands and Dogger Bank with historical results each time.

Yes, I did some more reading and Bristol was at Stanley refueling and was too late to join the actual fight just a HMS Canopus was intentionally grounded for stability to defend Stanley.

I believe the oob in the GWAS scenarios includes them for campaign scenario purposes and what if gaming.

I do own AoD and re-read some of it last night. Overall they are a good set of rules like V@S. My biggest gripe with both of them is that the company does not provide a useable ship data sheet as well as a player aid(cheat sheet). They rely on players to come up with their own. V@S has been around long enough that there is a good resource of refernce material and custom data sheets, but not the case with AoD that I have found so far. I like the fact thatt hey are hard bound books, but without the copies of a useable data sheet(pre-made with boxes to mark off) provided it requires some significant work on the players part and is not playable from the start IMO.

If anyone knows of a resource site for AoD I am more than willing to give it some more thought. Just lack the time to build something nice myself.

TIA,

I posted data sheets for all the ships needed for Dogger Bank here:

Maybe I should add the Coronel/Falklands ships, as I've done those as well.

Thanks, I saw those in the another thread as I was looking. Yes, it would be greatly appreciated if you can post any others you have.

As you might notice in my other post I think it is bad business that Mongoose does not already provide these. ;)
