Basing for larger miniatures

I have recently started work on the Kleggs and Mechismo and, even in the early stage of clean-up and painting, I have been struck (not literally) by the way in which the ‘standard’ sized bases just do not look or feel right for these larger miniatures.

Would there be any penalty/disadvantage in game terms for using (slightly) larger bases for these miniatures?

The only real issue I can think of is that more models can get into melee with you. So if you're facing something like a zombie horde you'll get even more swamped than usual. I can't see any mechanical advantage to larger bases so I'd be inclined to allow it.

Personally I like large models on small bases, it makes them look even bigger. :D

Thanks for the reply; that's a fair point about allowing more miniatures to 'pile in' during combat. Then again, if someone wants to go toe-to-toe with my Kleggs they are very welcome to try. :)

As I spend more time painting than playing I am going for larger bases as I don't want my figures falling over and getting chipped.

2 options:

1. set a house rule, max of 6 attackers on open ground and 4 if you're against a wall, that's the most that could if you were on a small base.

2. be a man, kleggs fear no one, you should be butchering meat for payment so fast that you'll never have 7 models against you. if anything you should look at as an advantage being able to charge 2 people an inch and a quarter apart at once.

I've rebased a couple of models - HS/1 Judge, Mechanismo and a couple of the bigger robots - onto 30mm bases. In practice, I don't see it making any difference.

It's done purely for visual appeal - I don't like models whose feet stick off the edge of the base. :)

That sounds more than fair enough to me. :D

I have finally go around to assembling and painting a Sentenoid; has anyone based this mechanical monstroisity of are most players just resting it on its four legs?

I fielded my unbased sentenoid against a Justice Department force last night. Turns out basing, or the lack thereof, didn't matter as it was turned into scrap by bike cannons on turn one before it even fired a shot.
