Basing 1/2400th scale ships?

New to the game. and naval gaming in general actually, and would appreciate other gamers input on basing ships in 1/2400th scale. Some ideas about decent sizes would help greatly!

No idea if this is going to work out or not yet but based on someone's (I forget who) idea I did the following:

measured the ships I have, broken down into classes (e.g)

CAs 3/8"x(2 3/4" - 3")

So I plan on basing them on some flexible steel from Litko 3/4" x 4" ,then buy some flexible magnet strips 1" x 4" to use for nameplates.

Get more nameplates than ships so for example the Tirpitz/Bizmarck I can have one Bizmarck-class BB and 2 nameplates depending on what battle I'm fighting.

Now.. for iconic ships (like the bizmarck) I might actually want one of each so the camo is correct. But for lesser ships probably not.

That's the plan so far. it'll be a while before I get the basing materials and possibly longer before I get to painting.

For Reference (based on RN and KM):

BBs 1/2" x (3 1/2" - 4")
CVs 1/2" x (3 1/2" - 4")
CBs 1/2" x (3 3/4" - 4 1/4" [Hood])
CLs 3/8" x (2 3/4" - 3")
CAs 3/8"x(2 3/4" - 3")
BCs 3/8" x 3"

For my 1/2400 collection, I used:

DDs= 1/2"x2-1/4"
CLs, AOs= 1/2"x3-1/4"
CAs= 1/2"x4"
old/small BBs= 3/4"x3"
newer/fast BBs&CVs= 3/4"x4"

Basically, figure out what models you have or might be buying. Measure for the extremes within each ship class (usually on length) and how they might "push" the base sizes you've initially chosen. Then decide if you want to make the base size to incorporate all ships of a given category or to "chop off" the few exceptions and fit them on another base size. I think I broke my rule a few times and fit a ship into another hull base size because it just looked better there (again, usually based on length). The width didn't seem to be a problem as each hull size did not vary greatly in beam.

Hiya,

My owm WW2 collection is based on Axis and Allies: War at Sea 1/1800 models and I opted for a base that was roughly 1cm wider and longet than the ship dimensions. The extra 'sea' gave me room for the ship name plate and a national flag in the top left hand corner with the bow facing due west. The flags I used were 1/600th which on the base looks very nice.

Cheers,
