Barnest2's attempts at model's :D

After talking to middenface, I though I would have a crack at google sketch up... and i thought I would have a go at the free trader from the main book (just external for now)
Here is my work in progress :D

Very basic for now, and I'm afraid its links rather than images, cos it won't post them, but meh.
Tell me what you think...

Good start, feel free to poke me for advice.

One thing I can tell you is, build the ship in 1/2.

Oh and don't forget your towel.

Why 1/2?
I think i'm ok for now, gonna do engines, weapons...
Is there a way of doing curves? Like curving it down on the top deck too the lower deck...

OK, its a fat trader... and I'm cross now, cos middenface already did a very good version... I just found it by searching google images :p

Looks like you're getting the hang of it. I'm sure that middenface can help speed the learning curve. It is better that he's already done one as he can tell you exactly what is what as you hit snags on that particular design.

Sorry, it was my second model that one, well sort off. (not if you coun't lots of tanks...)

You can never have more than enough version of the same ship, use it as a guide! Do it better. Plenty of flaws in that one.

1/2 the ship means you only need to work on one half then when you are done copy* and flip the 1/2 and join to the other half. You can flip along red - green or blue directions (XYZ)

Curves. Tricky in SU but do able. It may be worth youtubing the 'lathe' function well it actually the 'follow me' too... I'll try and get a piccie explaining it.

The arc too is good for curve. Spheres are easy to do, really.. ;)

I'd recommend looking for some plugins. Theres one I use that draw domes. (or is it rubyscripts I get confused)

Bear in mind if you draw an arc line or circle you can increas the segments to make it smoother (right click and entity info) I use that trick alot!

* Move tool and click CTRL till you see a + appear then drag!

Some work done
I realised that the cargo deck is 6 meters high, so I extended it while keeping the delta's in a position to give lift...
Yeah, this isn't your normal fat trader it seems :D

Shot showing the engines and thrust modules... they may look like rocket engines :D It's a sci-fi ship, I thought I would go 'retro'

Pretty shot, showing the fuel intakes and the curve of the bridge and forwards hull

EDIT:
realised I'm actually as far as I can get with the fat trader without image editing software to do decals and windows and such...
So here it is, the finished sketch-up model.
Very different from others, see what you think

I've used it before, several years ago, when doing some work-experience for an architects office... It's easy to pick back up to some extent...
I'm now working on a serpent police cutter, just so I can try turrets...
Anyone want any shots of the far-trader just tell me the angle and i'll send it.

EDIT: Oh dammit middenface... Not doing the serpent, I'll grab something from traders and gunboats once I'm back, and i'll do that

Heh, I'm not proud of that Serpent. So I'd do another... if I was you.

What did you not like about it?
It looks like my models are going to be more angular than yours middenface, but that may change as I learn...

Compared to what I've done since, its not that good. Maybe its not finished. Turret is a little too big, hull detailing is a little dull, the rear end is not too good either...

I've got better since....

So what's the learning curve like on Sketchup? I've one heck of a curvy stealth-designed ship for which I've done 2D external views on graph paper but I'm not familiar with 3D design software, as in never even booted up software let alone attempted 3D design. I admit I'm severely artistically challenged when it comes to perspective.

It's pretty easy to learn but isn't designed well for complex external 3D stuff. It was designed to sketch out home designs and the like.

Ah, ok. Still, it might behoove me to give it a try to start my slow crawl up the 3D art learning curve. Better to bump up against its limits than get frustratingly lost in the intricacies of more capable (non-free) packages.

Thank you for the reply.

OK, so got some time and decided to do a full scale model of the town class from my Pbp.
First go was far too fat, so I tried again, a slimmer, longer, cruiser design:

That little black dot is a person btw
http://i877.photobucket.com/albums/ab336/barnest2/townclassWIP2.jpg?t=1300553931
and from behind :D
She is some 230 metres long, with a width of 30 metres at the widest point. I have yet to do any detailing, this is purely the basic hull...
Oh, internal floor area is... 40,500 metres squared...

Did the primary guns, just because I could :D
http://i877.photobucket.com/albums/ab336/barnest2/Townprimaryarmament.jpg?t=1300556226
That's 4 particle beam bays. There is also a 5th, but that's mounted at the rear, as a chase gun :D

Top deck fusion guns bays. They are mounted on either side of bridge superstructure.

detailing on the fusion guns. The turrets are slightly smaller than the particle bays.
