B5 VS Star Trek

time to employ the Picard manouvre and talk them all to death... god i hate the utter boringness and banality of star trek.

Star Trek is what it is, and when they pushed the envelope it was good. It just tended to be a bit samey after what, seven seasons of TNG?

Babylon 5 had more depth, but damn, it wasn't subtle. I just finished season 2 the other day, and that Earth ministry of peace saying "At least we will know peace in our time," was a little bit much. We already have the fascist analogy working overtime, there was no need to beat it into the ground like that. I was just waiting for someone to say "Clark is Earth's problem."

I enjoyed the vids, but is it me or are all those capital ships whizzing around a bit close to each other, whirling around like starfighters.

Cheers
Mark

DS9 was by far the best series. It had proper battles, better characters and you got to see what life was like for the characters not just what happened when they were 'at work'.

Of course it helped that they were competeing directly with B5 (I suspect the competition between the two helped more than a little to make both shows so good in forcing them to try and one up each other constantly :D)

Funny thing is, more than half of all Star Trek fans really did not like DS9. But I have to agree with you Locutus, DS9 in my opinion was very good (except season 3 or 4)... But lets all remember B5 meant something, it was more than just a deep space francise.

I am re-watching space above and beyond, sure, it had more plot holes than the grand giant dutch cheese of plot, but It was cool. Shame it only got one series, and I can blank out the really bad episodes easily enough.

Not if it was the cool Mirror universe trek.........esp the Enterprise one - one of their most enjoyable episodes! (at elast for me and not just for the girls!)

Now that's something I'd like to see more of - it hints at political manouvring, intrigue, assassination and spaceships blowing the **** out of each other; four of the key elements of B5...

Following on from the I'm a mac, I'm a PC adverts.

I'm a trekie, I like to dress up in costume, paste a pastie to my head, and speak an alien language

I'm a Baby, I can comprehend a story arc of more than 45 mins...

please continue.....

See thats why I liked DS9, it was Star Trek but with a story arc longer than 45 minutes ;)

And series 3 and 4 of DS9 were great, it was 1&2 that sucked ;)

Trekie: If it from the 60's nearly all the aliens get blown to pieces, if its from the 90's the aliens get bored to death.

Fiver: If its from the 90's nearly everyone gets blown to pieces, if its from the 00's and is currently released (i.e. that bag of crap) I get bored to death!

It's still the term most commonly used though personally Id just say B5 Fan ;)

Personally I'll be the first to admit I'm both a Trekkie and a B5 Nut, but dont even get me started on the term Trekker....

I know the usual joke before anyone makes it but imho a 'Trekker' is just a trekkie whos to pathetic to even admit it ;)

In order of coolness though Id rate: from best to worst:

Babylon 5
Star Trek DS9
Stargate SG-1 (up until the end of season 8 )
Heroes
Firefly (this would rate higher if it had actually had its full run)
Stargate Atlantis
New Battlestar Galactica
X-Files (up until they got rid of Mulder, talk about jumping a whole POOL of sharks...)
Space Above and Beyond (again might have been higher if theyd actually finished it)
Star Trek TNG
Star Trek TOS
Star Trek Enterprise (the fourth season only though, the rest doesnt count ;))
B5: Crusade
Star Trek: Voyager

And thats pretty much where I draw the line, if its worse than crusade and Voyager I dont really rate it. Yes that includes both Andromeda and Lexx both of which were unmitigated crap as far as I'm concerned.

This ALSO includes Dr. Who. Sorry but I just HATE it. It's just lame :P

The more I hear about DS9 the more I feel I should get into it. Normally I avoid anything Trek-related like the plague.

It was the only trek show that had something resembling an overall story arc that carried from episode to episode and linked the seasons together.

I should note though that the only reason why that happened in the first place was because Roddenberry finally kicked off the mortal coil sometime during the 2nd season, and the writers for the show finally got to do what they wanted. Its the same reason why voyager got to be fairly good after a time as well, from 4th season on.

Gene Roddenberry died in 1991. Which would have been season 4 or 5 of TNG. DS9 wasn't created until 1993, which would have been season 7 TNG. Voyager didn't start until 1995, four years after Roddenberry had already died.

Andromeda crap?!? How can you blaspheme so on these forums???

And you didnt even mention Farscape!!

Stone him, stone him!
