Automatic Promotion Event

If I roll an event result of automatic promotion...

do I still roll for advancement?
ie. can I get promoted 2 ranks this term?

or do I still roll to see if I have a forced continuance (12) or have to leave (<terms served)?

or to see if I get the second skill that term?

if I don't have to roll do I get the second skill automatically as well?

Some of this is discussed toward the end of this thread

oh, searching resulted in this being asked but never answered here:

I think you get a promotion (but no skill), and then roll for advancement, whence you get another promotion and a skill. But we could do with some confirmation.

(I've houseruled you get a decoration for that 12, too :))

in this thread Jame Rowe allows both

this thread post also indicates the preference to use both

So if it was brought up to a vote, it looks like the answer is both. To me, if something is not specified clearly in the book you do what you want (you being the referee). You certainly don't open up to public opinion what color the walls should be at the local tavern and go with whatever the majority decides.

Now if Mongoose wants to say what they intended, I'd be glad to hear it.

so it seems there has yet to be an O word regarding this?

advancement and promotion are not the same...

promotion usually results from advancement (except where the character has already achieved max rank)

but advancement also entails the skill gained and determines if you have to leave the career or are forced into another term as well.

the event says automatic promotion not advancement
however, the rule on page 8 under commission mentions that events which give DM's or automatic advancement apply to commissions as well
which seems to imply that automatic advancement and automatic promotion are the same thing as I have yet to see an event that mentions automatic advancement.

And there never may be. Just like there may never be an O word on what color the walls should be at the local tavern. Do what you want.

Please give a book reference to promotion - other than in events.

Yes, I see automatic as a +100(automatic) DM to the advancement (or commission) roll - a natural 12 would still result in the character being required to continue in the career. With a +automatic DM you would never have a roll result in less than the terms and be forced out (logically, why would someone be rewarded and forced out in the same term)

As always though, feel free to do it your own way.
