I've given some consideration to how magic might be practiced in Atlantis. I am thinking that there are seven schools of magic, of which the most common would have been the Mantra. Runes would be unknown, but my thought is that Mantra is very similar to Rune Magic except that instead of using Runes, the caster recites well-practiced mantras which play the rule of runes. In fact, I am thinking that rune magic may have evolved from mantra.
I'm not entirely sure how to handle the mechanics. It should be a lot harder to learn a mantra than it is to attune to a rune, since the whole point of having a rune is to capture the essence that in mantra has to be created through the spellcaster's voice. Perhaps after three months of continuous study, or six months of part-time study, the student can make a mantra-casting check to see if she has "attuned" herself to the mantra she is currently studying. Being attuned to a mantra automatically allows the caster to attune to the same rune, but the opposite does not hold.
