I heard an interesting theory as to why Base-12 was used quite commonly in the past (eg. for time, and I think weights and measures in some cultures): you can count to 12 on one hand !
How ? Using your thumb as a pointer, count through the three segments of each finger in turn 3x4 = 12.
So you can imagine some Sumerian market trader counting out goods with one hand whist keeping track with the other. Neat.
