Ask MongooseMatt ANYTHING!!!

Terry Mixon

Emperor Mongoose
Okay, not really anything, but when we post questions about the rules or potential typos in the feedback area, we often don't receive a response, so I'm creating this thread in the hopes of getting some response to questions we have, even if it is "we're looking at that" or some such.

I'll kick this off with a question I posted a few days ago. The emergency low berths in High Guard 2022 Update are listed at MC1 a pop. Seems real pricy since Mongoose 1e and all the previous versions of Traveller we checked had it being KCr100. In Mongoose 1e, it was listed as MCr.1 and we suspect a typo. Can we get some clartity on that so we can update the starship build sheet to reflect what we suspect if we're right? Thanks.

Also, allow me to suggest that adding KCr, BCr (or GCr to please @Geir), and TCr to your repertoire would be really helpful and would minimize the complaints about not having comma separation in your big numbers, too.

And sorry for all the wild AMA questions you're about to get @MongooseMatt. ;)

I did say optional. There isn't a timeframe slot for that, but there should be an option to allow for the useless official map and the one that at least has all the worlds in a form that is useable.

Honestly, if the map used the one I created from the Sector Creation Guide, it wouldn't mess with anyone as the map as used there now isn't useful for homebrews either. People playing in that sandbox already would need to substitute their own map.
I'm not sure how you say it's not useful for homebrews. Of course a homebrew involves their own map. How else would a homebrew work?

Some people want everything filled in for them.
Some people want to integrate their own stuff without having players coming in thinking "it says this in the official books"
Some people don't care either way.

Travellermap isn't technically official, but it sure gets treated like it is. People on this forum have complained when Travellermap and the Mongoose books didn't match for one reason or another.

It's fundamentally no different than folks who don't want PoD/Singularity/Wrath of the Ancients effects to be applied to the setting maps because they haven't played them yet or aren't going to. Other people clearly want all those things applied to the setting because they think they are cool.

Anyway, as far as I am aware, Travellermap is still a privately owned site by the guy who maintains it. It has non canon stuff in it, especially out in the periphery. If he wants to stick another "unofficial" sector on his map for you, he can do so.

What I am specifically saying is that representing Foreven Sector like is is online helps neither those who want a useable sector map nor those that have a homebrew map for their table. That sector on TravellerMap literally serves no one.

It's a fansite. Take it up with the fan who maintains it. He thinks it serves some purpose. Presumably so did the fans who wrote the article.

Nothing about Travellermap is official. He does make an effort to use official sources when then exist. But somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of Travellermap is made up by fans with no official product support whatsoever.

If you can convince the site owner to use your unofficial stuff instead of those other guys' unofficial stuff, that's fine. That's how fansites work.

Edit: For example, everything in that row from Foreven to spinward is unofficial. One subsector of Far Frontiers was in a 3rd party adventure (FASA), the rest in fanzines. Everything in Yklirdanzh and Ysadra are fan made.

Travellermap, Travellerwiki, Travellerworlds are all unofficial material. Which is why they frequently don't agree with each other.

Once in a while, something from the unofficial sections of the Travellermap gets officialized. For instance, the Hanstone Sector is unofficial fan product, but now a small part of it was used for Cluster Truck, so that makes at least that little bit official.

On the other hand, sometimes something unofficial from one of those sources gets used and the original author explodes in rage.

Contact inexorabletash (admin of travellermap) and ask him if he can post your Sector as a "Faraway Sector". There are more than a few homebrew sectors and variant sectors (including versions of Foreven) already hosted on Travellermap. They are generally placed at coordinates "far away" from the main map, but once somebody knows where they are (or searches by name - your Foreven will have a unique identifier), you can go right to it.

It just won't be hosted in the "Preserve Sector" location on the Map.

BTW, here is a list of the ones that are already hosted there:
