Ask MongooseMatt ANYTHING!!!

Terry Mixon

Emperor Mongoose
Okay, not really anything, but when we post questions about the rules or potential typos in the feedback area, we often don't receive a response, so I'm creating this thread in the hopes of getting some response to questions we have, even if it is "we're looking at that" or some such.

I'll kick this off with a question I posted a few days ago. The emergency low berths in High Guard 2022 Update are listed at MC1 a pop. Seems real pricy since Mongoose 1e and all the previous versions of Traveller we checked had it being KCr100. In Mongoose 1e, it was listed as MCr.1 and we suspect a typo. Can we get some clartity on that so we can update the starship build sheet to reflect what we suspect if we're right? Thanks.

Also, allow me to suggest that adding KCr, BCr (or GCr to please @Geir), and TCr to your repertoire would be really helpful and would minimize the complaints about not having comma separation in your big numbers, too.

And sorry for all the wild AMA questions you're about to get @MongooseMatt. ;)

I think there is a strong case for Mercenary being rewritten as a single and better organized book. A lot of great information, organized poorly without enough examples and context.
100 percent.

I'd be happy to help.

But Mongoose and Mercenary seems to be cursed. Two failed attempts now. Maybe better to just give up and focus elsewhere.

The first "mercenary" book was actually some 30+ yrs ago (LBB Ed.) Hardly seems fair to hold that against them! I generally liked Mercenary books because they showed a lot better what running an Army entails. It would also be very portable to later things like The 5th frontier war or if they ever get around to another Colony builder's book! As General Barrow said "Amateurs study tactics. Professionals study logistics!

But that doesn't address my original question! Is there some officially accepted effect on CBAS from being "Armored infantry" (As defined in book 1) or do I have to just wing it?

I’ve been running content from the Mercenary boxed set quite a bit recently (two intra-Vespexer fights and a lengthy series of combats on Acrid). It can work, but you do have to wing it in various places. The abstract resolution system can work, but you have to be so conservative with the initial DMs or the players will make every combat trivial.

On armour, where the armour value of one party is greater than the average value of the weapon damage of the other, I allow that party to reduce casualties in the same way as with a successful support role in the casualties stage.

I have a few questions about the Traveller Starter Pack, but they would fall under the heading of Sales Figures. How many people have downloaded the Traveller Starter Pack? How often is it downloaded each day on average? How often are the Bu and Embla freebies downloaded? How often has the Traveller Paranoia PDF been downloaded? I'm just trying to get an idea of how much throughput there is for those products.

And of course, if any of this information is considered too private since it is business related to answer, I understand.

Actually not easy questions to answer, as they are not all downloaded from one place, there are third party promotions that we might not always track.

But.

I can tell you that, from our website alone, about 6,000 people downloaded the Starter Pack last year, Bu & Embla was about 2k, and the JTAS Index, so far, about 1.5k (we have not promoted the last two all that massively, it has to be said... and maybe not the Starter Pack either...).

Thank you. That gives me data to think about.
