"Artificial Intelligence" ?

Mongoose
In the German edition of Mongoose Traveller one of the ship's software
programs has been translated as "Künstliche Intelligenz" (= Artificial
Intelligence), with the explanation that this program enables "the ship"
to understand and obey verbal commands.
Besides, the computer software table in the equipment section of the
book also mentions artificial intelligence programs.

This causes a bit of confusion over here, because some people under-
stand artificial intelligence as "fully sentient and self-aware" (as the term
is often used in public with this meaning), while others think the entries
in Mongoose Traveller describe improved expert programs able to han-
dle complex tasks in a specific field, but being neither sentient nor self-
aware.

There is a chance that some information may have been lost in the trans-
lation (which, unfortunately, happens quite often).

So, how do you read the "artificial intelligence" entries in MGT ?

Thank you ! :D

Sounds like it just means you can ask it a question in plain english (or german, or vilani or whatever) ;) and get an answer back in plain english. Not necessarily that the computer is actually intelligent, because that's TL 16+.

Oops, overlooked the neighbouring thread ... this happens each time my
guide dog is on vacation ...

Thank you, that answers my question: True AI is TL 16. :D

Front of the book, TL-11 entry. "The first true AI is possible". I guess if you want to start splitting hairs and saying "true AI" isn't actually intelligent, you could.
