I had various questions about how to apply the 'all effects are cumulative' aspect of critical hits, both as a result of achieving an effect of +6 or higher and as a result of sustained damage.
1. A ship with starting hull points of 80 sustains 24 points of damage from one attack -- ie, 30% of its starting hull. As I have interpreted the rules, that results in three severity-1 critical hits. If you roll the same location three times, therefore, the second and third critical hits are treated as severity 2 and 3.
- Does this mean that, if the location is Hull each time, the ship suffers an additional total of 6D damage (1D+2D+3D)? And will this also mean that it will likely result in further critical hits from sustained damage?
- What about if the location is M-Drive each time -- is the total DM penalty -3 or -6?
2. The same ship sustains 24 points of damage from one attack, but this time the attack has an effect +6, making it a severity-3 critical hit.
- Assuming the ship has taken no other critical hits, is the result under the severity-3 column applied, or the three results of columns 1, 2 and 3. So, if the location is Hull, does the ship suffer an additional 3D damage or 6D from this high-effect attack?
- In addition to the critical hit from that high-effect attack, the ship will also now suffer three severity-1 critical hits from sustaining damage equal to 30% of its starting hull -- thus, four rolls on the critical hits location table. Potentially, if the same location is rolled four times, the ship could have a severity-6 critical hit. The questions above then apply to this situation.
- In this scenario, then, potentially a scout ship or a free trader could be reduced to hull 0 with a single pulse laser attack and some unlucky rolling.
3. Finally, under the repair rules (CRB, p.150), it says damage to ship falls into two categories 'critical hits' and 'hull damage'.
- do critical hits to the Hull location need to be repaired as critical hits, or just as hull damage?
- is a severity-3 critical hit that is the result of three severity-1 hits to the same location treated as one critical hit or three, for the purposes of repair?
Many thanks,
Dan.
