Andre Norton's Wyverns for Traveller

Banded Mongoose
This species is adapted from Andre Norton’s Storm Over Warlock (free from Project Gutenburg http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/20788) & Ordeal In Otherwhere. They are innately psionic and have significant sexual dimorphism relating to both physical and psionic prowess, and on Warlock male Wyverns are second class citizens. Wyverns are native to the Red Zone world Warlock (UWP: E8687C7-2), but almost 10,000 Wyverns live off-world in various enclaves, where they receive normal education and are part of the interstellar community.

Wyverns are slender amphibious reptilian humanoids with four digits on their hands, a reptilian muzzle, eyes with vertical slit pupils, and small shiny scales. They all possess short spiky growths that start at a point in the middle of their foreheads and extend back and down their shoulder blades in a pattern reminiscent of wings.

Female Wyverns

Traits
• Height: 1.4-1.65 m
• Amphibious: Wyverns can hold their breath for 10 minutes.
• Mute: Wyverns cannot speak and must rely on telepathy, sign language, or a neural comm.
• Psionic Training: Female Wyverns undergo psionic training, as described on page 196 of the Traveller Core Rulebook, before they begin a career (effectively before their first term). All female Wyverns automatically know both Telepathy and Illusions and automatically possess 1 skill level in each. Those with a Psi of 6+ can roll normally to learn additional psionic powers (at a -2 penalty due to knowing 2 powers).
• Swimmer (6m): Wyverns can move through water at a speed of 6 meters.

Careers
• The following careers from the Traveller Core Rulebook are all suitable for traditional female Wyverns: Drifter (barbarian or wanderer), Psion, Rogue
• The following careers from the Traveller Core Rulebook are all suitable for off-world female Wyverns: Agent, Citizen, Drifter, Entertainer, Merchant, Psion, Rogue, Scholar, Scout.
• All female Wyverns receive DM +2 when attempting to quality for the Psion profession.

Traits
• Height: 1.6-1.85 m
• Amphibious: Wyverns can hold their breath for 10 minutes.

• Psionic Training: Male Wyverns undergo psionic training, as described on page 196 of the Traveller Core Rulebook, before they begin a career (effectively before their first term). They automatically possess Telepathy at Skill 0, but they cannot learn any powers except Telepathy, Clairvoyance, and Awareness. Also, they cannot use the telepathy powers Assault or Shield.
• Swimmer (6m): Wyverns can move through water at a speed of 6 meters.

Careers

Wyvern Psi Powers
Telepathy
All Wyverns possess the following modifications to Telepathy:
Mind Link
Costs 0 Psi points for Wyverns if used within Medium Range (within 50 meters)

Send Thoughts
Costs 0 Psi points if used within Close Range (within 5 meters).

Clairvoyance
Psychometry
The Traveller can sense the history of an object or a location by touching it. Psychometry only functions by touch, although gloves to not impede it. The Effect rolled determines the degree of knowledge gained.

Check: Average (8+) Clairvoyance (1D x minutes, PSI) check
Reach: Touch
PSI Cost: 2

Illusion
Through this talent the psion affects the perceptions of others, creating realistic illusions and even permitting herself to become invisible. Female Wyverns automatically know this talent. Other psions can learn it, but it’s learning DM for other psions is +0.

Image
The Traveller can create a single stationary image no larger than a person or a very large dog. This image cannot move or make noise. Every unshielded mind within Short range of the psion perceives this illusion. By doubling the Psi Point cost, the psion can increase the range of this effect to Medium. This power lasts Effect x 10 minutes or until the psion moves further than Short range from the image. Alternately, the psion can cause a single individual within Short range, so that only they can perceive the image. The psion must either be able to sense to target clearly with either their physical senses or via Life Detection or Clairvoyance.
Check: Routine (6+) Illusion (1D seconds, PSI) check
Reach: Short
PSI Cost: 1 (0 for images no larger than a housecat that are within Close range of the psion)

Glamour
This power allows the psion to project a subtle distraction within Short range of the psion. Those within the radius cease to pay the psion any attention, completely forgetting his presence, becoming temporarily distracted by something else: for the brief duration of the Glamour, the psion becomes, effectively, invisible, edited-out of the short-term memory. By doubling the Psi Point cost, the psion can increase the range of this effect to Medium. However, this effect instantly ends if for a particular target the psion shoves, manhandles, obviously attacks, or otherwise directly interacts with a target. This power lasts Effect x 10 minutes. Increasing the cost by 3 Psi Points and the difficulty by +2 permits the psion to disguise a number of additional targets equal to the Effect she rolls/2 (round up), but only as long as all targets remain within Short range of the psion. Alternately, the psion can cause a single individual within Short range, so that only they can’t perceive the psion. The psion must either be able to sense to target clearly with either their physical senses or via Life Detection or Clairvoyance.
Check: Average (8+) Illusion (1D x 10 seconds, PSI) check
Reach: Short
PSI Cost: 3

Phantasm
The Traveller can create mobile sight and sound images that are perceptible to anyone within Short range of the psion. By doubling the Psi Point cost, the psion can increase the range of this effect to Medium. Objects that no larger than a housecat cost 1 point, disguising a single person or any object of similar size costs 2 points, while disguising a single object no larger than an elephant, a large car, or a group of people all in Close range of the Traveller costs 3 points. This power lasts Effect hours. Creating an object, rather than simply disguising something of similar size and shape increases the Difficulty by +2. This power lasts Effect x 10 minutes or until the psion moves further than Short range from the image. Alternately, the psion can cause a single individual within Short range, so that only they can perceive the phantasm. The psion must either be able to sense to target clearly with either their physical senses or via Life Detection or Clairvoyance.
Check: Difficult (10+) Illusion (1D x 10 seconds, PSI) check
Reach: Short
PSI Cost: 1-3

Sight
Any Traveller who can use projection can attempt to pierce any illusion, seeing through them without effort, if they succeed at an opposed roll Illusion against the psion who created it
Check: Routine (6+) Illusion (1D seconds, PSI) check
Reach: Short
PSI Cost: 0
