Am I seeing crazy things?

Just flicked through the latest Signs and Portents magazine and noticed a small article that left me hoping and thinking I'd read something crazy.

"BF(d)Evo
The Battlefield Evolution line is going to be
retired shortly in order to make room for
some new miniatures games that will be
hitting the stores shortly. If your collection
is still missing a component you may want
to grab it quickly before it is gone for good."

Can this be true; first ACTA: B5 now Battlefield Evo'?

Certainly new for me!
:( :(

I wasn't aware that Mongoose still supported the miniatures line for BFE. I thought all production had ground to a halt years ago.

IMO the S&P announcement is talking about the printware books alone.

Or folks like Agis to release supporting products or OGL styled products?

I mean, my guys have yet to release, but give us a chance to get something out (look for it soon, btw! http://zupandevelopment.com )

But how are we supposed to get these things going at local clubs if the products are constantly disappearing?
Well, as far as I understand the announcement, the pdf files will still be available, so no problem as far as any support is concerned.

Hopefully the Logo License is not effected.

Ahem, after nearly two years after the existence of the Logo License you had plenty of time, or?

True, but a lot of gamers prefer the feel of a 'real' book in their hands and it gives them a bit more confidence in the system.

Well, given that we have jobs of our own, Shotgun as a night job, and a young baby at home, and Ranger is busy with his thesis paper...

Yeah, our bad, but some stuff takes time. Luckily, this gave us plenty of time to make notes on other projects. :D

Yup, "real" life can be in the way of writing game supplements... 8)

This is one of my issues with this. I just worked up interest in World at War. On top of that, I just started working on a couple of settings, too. They say they're releasing some new miniature games. I'm going to be really leery about getting into these. There are only a couple of settings I can think of that I'd be willing to pick up if the game is just going to be gone in a few years.

But if the pdf stay, the game is still alive and "around" as long as you want to play it, or?
By personal experience /WaW: Gear Krieg) I can assure you that the decision to make a print run is not an easy one. Basically you are investing a chunk of money and you are not sure if the books sell good enough to get you a return of investment, I am sure that Matt will have a sure look on the sales numbers to make the right decision, a company like Mongoose is not selling 1 Million books by making only mistakes... 8)

Hi guys,

To explain the decision. . .

There are several reasons that can bring about the end of a run of books, and when they dovetail together, a sensible company has to make the choice. In the case of the current BF Evo books, it breaks down like this;

1. The books have been around for quite a while - if someone wanted the books, they have had every chance up to now.

2. Some books are 'evergreen' selling constantly (Victory at Sea is a great example of this, and we have no plans to remove it - indeed, we are looking at adding more to that range). Most are not. Sales-wise, it is probably fair to say the current BF Evo range have had their day.

3. We will certainly keep the BF Evo books around as PDFs. However, to do the same with books, we need to maintain warehouse space for them. This, unfortunately costs money every month, even if few books are selling.

4. From a strategic perspective, we are now gearing up to release a new range of miniatures games. More than one of these will use a rules set that will be very familiar to BF Evo fans (this rules set has now been around for years, in one form or another, starting with Gangs of Mega-City One, through Starship Troopers - it has its fans, so it won't be disappearing by any means!). We need to clear down the decks, so to speak, and prepare our range as a whole for these new games.

This latter point applies to Wraith Recon too, which will also be going - we believe it would cause confusion with the new RuneQuest Wraith Recon range later this year.

We haven't got round to removing the BF Evo books from the site just yet, so if you are after hardcopies, now is the time!

Thank you, Matt, for the clarifications. Your point #4 alleviates my concerns, specifically the point that the rules will still be used, just in newer products. Will the OGL still be available?

It's hard to generate any enthusiasm for any Mongoose products when they have the shortest shelf life around.

I can understand and sympathise with that.

Hope the new direction is worthwhile and I certainly hope it is sooner rather than later! :)
