Afterburner on Victory

What the heck does the afterburner on the victory do? How is it different than all power to engines? I seem to remember reading somewhere that you get to make one turn with afterburner.

its not a misprint, it means when you APTE you can double your speed. but can only use it once per game. still no turns however.

yeah, which considering its what speed 12? it makes it the fastest ship on APTE and it still has a rear beam and all other weapons are turreted :) makes life interesting.

The War-level Victory once afterburnered at Chicago III, and in doing so not only evaded the front arc of a Primus put kept on boresight to a parked Octurion, fired the Lightning Cannon, and won, barely, when it got parked by the Octurion's fire. Wihtout the afterburner, the old War-level Victory would have sustained two turn's redirected beam firepower, and given how the ship ended, would have died, giving a victory to the Centauri. The Afterburner kept the Victory alive, allowing the ISA to win.

That game decided the victor of the Chicago III, too.

So it's been of supreme use at least once.....

Is it legal to use just the Afterburner and not All Power to Engines? The reason I ask is because a ship using the Afterburner trait is specifically allowed to make any number of turns, on page 12 of SFOS.

Yes, there seperate. Afterburner is a ship/fighter trait that can be used once during a game.
While APTE is a special action. :)
On second thoughts, i think afterburner can only be used in conjunction with APTE.
Perhaps other more knowledgable folk could answer this one!

Also sfos page 12 refers to fighters and not ships with the afterburner trait, ship cannot turn using it (as far as i know).

Directly from Revised Edition, Rules (Book 1), Page 16 -- the Ship Trait section:

"...[fluff]..When using the All Power to Engines Special Action, the ship may double its Speed for the turn. Afterburners may only be used once per game."

I only find references to Afterburners in SFoS with respect to Auxilliary Craft. Afterburners on Aux Craft work differently from Afterburners on Ships.

--- Upshot: you must use APToE to get the opportunity to choose whether or not to use Afterburners.

CZ has it right, the Victory can APTE for a 50% boost, or APTE+Afterburners (once per battle) for a 100% boost.
Fighters get a 50% boost when they use afterburners since they can't APTE.

One time at ID touney I had about 6 White Stas CAF my Victory... so I AB'd 20", right out of arc

actually SFOS disagrees with you. the aux craft action APTE can only be performed by craft with afterburners!
