Walsall Tournament Report

My thanks to Ken and all the boys at Walsall for sorting out a most enjoyable day – great games and great fun.

Thank you.

Having achieved success with my fleets in the previous tournament, I did not see the need to change my fleet – however I would find that such success would not be forthcoming this time!

Game One
My Fleet – Balvarin (4 Razik,, 4 Sentri) 2 Demos, 4 Haven
Andy – EA –2 Chronos, 2 Chronos Missile Frigates, 1 Mrymidon, 4 Thunderbolts

I was fairly confident to start with, I had a good balanced fleet, In sinks and hopefully fighter superiority. The two fleets cruise towards each other – with a large asteroid field concealing each other for the first two turns. The Chronos adopted a formation reminiscent of a World War II bomber formation and my Attack ships began to adopt a standard circling movement. Non plussed Andy maintained his cool and as the two Centauri gunships swung round met them with a pair of Chronos. The Centuairi unleashed a hail of torpedoes which to bounced off the tough Earthers armour or were shot down by its interceptors. The return fire damaged the lead Demos, despite its own defences and a Sentri (which exploded as it tried to intercept). One the next turn the Mrymidon swung round the fields other end and was jumped by several haven one of which was pounced on by the Thunderbolts, with the Raziks out of position. The Two Demos closed into close range and the Chronos circled. Having won initiative, The Thunderbolts vaporised a haven and the Missile frigates blasted the lead Demos, destroying its ability to fire and sending it within a few points of destruction. The return fire was again ineffectual and things began to go downhill. Despite a couple of small moments – the Raziks catching and killing the T-Bolts and the Balvarin obliterating the lone Mrymidon, the Chronos calmly and methodically picked the fleet apart, absorbing the return fire with aplomb. One Chronos was finally reduced to be within 1 pt of Crippling but at the cost of the remaining fighters and Havens. Battered and harassed by the other frigates – the Balvarin opened a jump point and fled.

Big loss to a fun opponent who played to his advantages extremely well – a big zero for my opening score !! 

Game Two
My Fleet – Liati, Demos, Kutai, 2 Haven
Burger – 3 Ashinta

Much less confident – I seldom do well against Minbari with Centauri and this was to be no exception. We both moved cautiously down opposite sides of the table and burger quickly dived into the favourite place of any Minbari player – an Asteroid field. I promptly stopped out of range and made it very clear I was not following him in there! Obligingly he came out again, on CDB and I Charged – the Liati swinging round to the flank to line up on all the three Minbari frigates. I got a big stroke of luck with the Cruiser seeing two of them and hitting one frigate hard, a very lucky shot taking out its Stealth, again luckily – my Assassination target! B The Return fire – always scary from a squadron hammered the Liati just as hard, stripping it of most of its damage and crew. We continued to exchange fire, with the Centuari wilting under the accurate twin linked mini beams but battering the target even as the Liati fled into cover. Sadly an Ashinta is by no means fragile and by the time it was down to its last few damage points – most of the rest of the Centauri ships were heavily damaged. Desperate to get rid of it I moved the Laiti so it could see the damaged Minbari warship and lashed out with its turret. Of course I then hit with every dice, caused two criticals, both vitals and caused a massive explosion which killed the Demos, a Haven and one of the two Rutarians which had been doing sterling work chipping away at the other two frigates. So I had the kill but only put myself in a worse position (although to be fair the two ships may have been killed by the other Ashinata. We danced around each other a bit – and I only really succeeded in loosing my remain ships and my Rutarian, including one memorable turn where two ships faced each other – I failed to see the Ashinta, but dodged all the shots back! However my dodges were to fail me in the next two turns and although I managed to cripple one Ashinta – they seemed to have gained accurate guns and the Liati was finally destroyed!
Burger was, as always a skilled opponent and good fun – he ignored his bad luck at loosing his stealth early on and soldered on to give my a bloody nose and inflict another 20 –0 defeat – Oh Dear!

Game Three
I was now firmly established in last place – and was faced with fighting against a fellow Centauri player from the Kettering Games Club for my next game.

My Fleet – Balvarin, Elutarin, 3 Demos, 1 Corvan
Alex – Balvarin, 2 Elutarin, 2 Demos,

Hmm a little similar no? So there was not likely to be much subtlety here and so it proved!! We unleashed out fleets at each other – me risking it big time by forgoing CBD and charging at my opposite numbers. A Demos each was battered and my Elutarin nearly shattered by accurate fire from its two opposite numbers and been sent adrift and only being able to fire on a 4+. I forgot this and only remembered at the end of the turn after I had caused heavy damage with it – I rolled the 4+ failed and we erased the damage! Ships hammered at each other and fighters chased it other into the swirling melee but Alex’s ships emerged triumphant – winning a clear victory but I had fought enough to scrape 3 points and drag myself up to Paul (Clanger) as we both remained at the bottom of the table!

Getting better (well a bit) – 17 – 3 Loss

Two minds here – good to see Alex playing well and handing it out to his opponent – but I would have preferred it not to be me!! : Still at least the Centauri won!!!

Game Four
Hmm a bit embaressing this one………………..

My Fleet – 2 Shadow Ships, 1 Stalker, 2 Scouts
Richard – Adira, 2 Dargan

Oh dear, to be honest when Richard unveiled his fleet I thought he was always going to be hardpressed to even get shots at my ships and so it proved. The First Dargan was cut inhalf by a horribily powerful beam shot from one Shadow Ship and on the next turn, a scoend ship shimmered into far on the Adiras flank. The second Dargan lasted another turn before being chopped into pieces by the Stalker, Scout and Ship and the Aidra suffered a big movement crit with no hope of even firing back. We called it rather than play out numerous turns of the Adira being sliced at but with no chance of even firing back

A rather hollow 20 – 0 victory for me kept me off the bottom – Sorry Richard

Great Games – Great fun - once agin my sincere thanks for all everyone did to make it such a brilliant day

Charles, absolutely no worries at all mate, I had just as much fun and it was great fun seeing and hanging out with all you guys once again.

As for my games, well it went along the lines of [loss/draw/win/tabled], with some memorable moments. Such as two haven patrol boats, vital systems 3 critting a Balvarin, with its ickle matter cannon. The other was a TOTAL and utter fluke against paul [sorry mate, coz it was a fluke] which saw a very battered and dented centurion vital systems 6 crit his drakh warship, with its double damage plasma accelerator, scoring a nice 34 damage and vitally removing its GeG.

Other than that, it had been over a year since I had last played b5, and I wasnt much looking forward to playing people that have kept up with it. BUT I did enjoy the games, things did come back very quickly, and I'm definitely looking forward to some of the other tournaments and campaign weekends I know you guys are planning.

Good work Ken, most enjoyable :D

Game 1 vs Richard

My fleet: Shruuta, Shuuka.
His: 3 Demos, Sulust

His was not the best fleet to take on two Gaim queen ships. I emined his Demos squadron in the first turn, doing heaps of damage to all three. His Sulust did a little damage to my Shuuka with its beam. Then my fighters swarmed his Demoses en masse. Only his Sulust's beam did any damage to my smaller ship. When his sulust passed my fleet and failed to come around, I let my breaching pods do the work and capture his ship.

Game 2 vs Andy

My fleet: 3 Shadow scouts
His: 2 Teshlans, 1 Ashinta

I was a bit worried when Andy put two Tigaras on the table. But when he told me they were Teashlans, I breathed easy. Tigaras are monsters at short range, and can seriously mess up Shadow Scouts, but Teshlans would be okay if I could stay away from the beams.

Andy raced his ships toward an asteroid field. This allowed my to race across the board at full speed and fire on the flank of the closest ship, which happened to be my assassination target. A 6-5 crit and it was over.
His two remaining ships creeped into the asteroid field, but with scouts at close range, I hardly ever failed to break his stealth, and he mine. With only minibems to worry about, my ships were pretty safe, only one lucky crit put a dent in one scout. Again I destroyed everything for no loss.

Game 3 vs Keith

My fleet: 4 Shadow Scouts
His: Var'nic, 2 Thentus, Dag'kar, G'karith

He split his fleet into two, with the emine ships on one side an asteroid field. I went for the nastier ships, getting hit by a pulsar mine on the way across, but taking no damage. I fairly quickly dealt with the Thentuses, but one scout got hit by the front weapons of the Var'nic which hurt. Once the thentuses were down, I turned my attention to the two emine ships, I made the mistake of positioning the badly damaged scout in front of the Dag'kar and an emine almost destroyed it. After that I could keep out of the front arcs of his ships and finish them off before heading back to get the Var'nic as it came around.

Game 4 vs Niel

His Fleet: 2 Z'trikk, Xaak, Xill, 2 Vaarl.
Mine: 2 young shadow ships, stalker, 2 scouts

I was in the exact same position at the last Aldershot tourney - I was ahead on tournament points in the last and I was facing Niel's horde of Tzymms and masses of anti-matter torpedoes with my Shadows. Last time I was agressive and got blasted and consequently came second. This time I was much more cautious. Knowing Niels's tendancy to hide his fleet behind terrain, I did the same. Niel would need to come and get me to win. So I waited, with my ships weapons set to anti-fighter mode. Niel sent his fighters forward and waited just out of range. And waited.

Finally my fleet turned and speed away faster than his fighters could follow and just out of range of his torpedoes, should he come forward with his fleet.

And so, realising that he couldn't get me with his fighters and I wouldn't commit to fight both his fleet and fighter swarm, we decided to call the game a draw without a single shot fired.

And so I was victorious.

Really guys, apart from the Gaim, Gregs fleet choices are really predictable, someone should really consider giving him a kicking at some point lol...
and Neil, behind terrain, with Vree, Again lol, It's like watching tourney re-runs

Game 1, vs Shane
My fleet: Veshatan + Torotha, his fleet 1x WS Scout, 2x Vree missile thingies (you know, the one that starts with X ) and some fighters.
At the start I was quite confident, my beam range equals the Vree's torpedoes and at that range I would be on 5+ stealth. Unfortunately it never works out quite as you expect, stealth passed and a triple damage 6-5 crit saw the Veshatan reduced to just 8 damage points left in turn 1! From then on it was just mopping up, I managed to take out a Vree and some fighters with my web of not-very-much death, but being already a Battle ship down I didn't have much chance.

Game 2 vs Charles
My fleet: 3x Ashinta, his fleet Liati, Demos, Kutai, 2x Haven
This one was always going to depend on the stealth rolls, which went well (for him) at the start... assassination target lost stealth to a crit, but the Liati took 18 mini-beams in return. The trick with Ashintas is to exploit the arcs, which I think I did quite well, usually getting to fire at least 2 or sometimes 3 arcs with each one. A fun game that could have gone either way, right til the end!

Game 3 vs Andy
My fleet: Sharlin, his fleet: Drakh carrier and a cruiser.
This was one of the funniest games. With all the -1 AD crits, my Sharlin got down to a 4AD beam at one point. A timely All Hands On Deck worked wonders though and it came back up to 7. Andy was a bit unlucky with his cruiser, which came out of hyperspace behind me and promptly lost special actions to a crit, allowing me to All Stop and watch it cruise into my front arc, next turn it died. As I pummeled the carrier the raiders were hitting me hard, we were both crippled. But the end of the game was looming, so a raider split off to claim the rescue ship and a 13 vs 15VP victory for Andy.

Game 4 vs Keith
My fleet: 3x Sharkaan, his fleet: G'Vrahn, G'Quan'eth, G'Quan, 2x G'Karith
Narn vs Minbari is never pretty! The threat of e-mines made me split up and not squadron, and lucky I did, they HURT! One Sharkaan fell but took out the G'Quan'eth with it. Then the G'Vrahn started to crumple under the weight of my tremendously lucky dice rolling, and pretty soon it was all over. There wasn't really much he could've done, it's one of those victories that makes you feel a bit bad but that is the nature of the game! At least one Sharkaan died though, that is always a victory, right? :)

I will be loading some images from the tournamet, hope people enjoy!

Well, it had to happen one day... the King of Walsall is no more! :(

Many thanks to everyone that turned up and a special thank you to Dale for helping me get everything sorted, John for providing his computer expertise on the day, Andy for helping with the setup the night before, Darren for his photographic talent, and everyone that helped out with their generous donations to the venue costs... I would have been a few quid out of pocket without your kind contributions.

My apologies for the lack of prizes at the end of the day, but I promise to do better next time...

My day went something like this...

Game 1 = My Vree vs. Digger's Narn
Started this game a bit warily as Digger's two, E-Mine carrying, Ka'Tans could make short work of my fighter based fleet (I had three Xeel carriers as my main offensive weapon). I did, indeed, lose a few Tzymms to the mines, but once they were out of the way, the Vree's extra range and manoueverability gave me a significant advantage... I would also have had a numerical advantage a lot sooner in the game if i'd remembered that the Xirr saucer I had carried a TRIPLE damage weapon and not double

Game 2 = My Crusade Era EA vs. Keith's Narn
Keith lost his two Thentus support ships for his G'Quan, but had managed to kill three of my four ermes. This left me two Chronos, a Hyperion and the last Hermes trying to kill off the mighty Narn battle ship! Also, Keith seemed to succeed with all his "Track that Target" rolls, and so I had to be a bit more wary of the G'Quan's Front arc than you'd normally expect... However, this was a fun, tactical game that went down to the wire, points win for the Narn Regime

Game 3 = ISA civil war vs. Shane
Shane had a WS Gunship, a single White Star and a Nolo'tar escort, the remaining points for his fleet went on a selection of fighters (Nials, T-Bolts and White Star Fighters)
I had 2 WS, the Liandra, a Xeel carrier, 2 Blue Stars and 2 Ximm Escorts.
Though the Gunship had the superior range, my WS/BS squadron had the support vessels to make sure they could steer clear of the Battle ships guns. However, a rookie mistake in the opening stages cost me a WS as I had moved them away from the Ximm's fighter protection... but after that, I maximised my fleet's strengths and picked off Shane's ships one by one.

Game 4 = My Vree vs. Andy's Shadows
I had played a similar game recently against Charles (Da Boss) and it was a very tactical affair... this game turned out the same. Andy's Ancient Shadow ship was introduced to my Z'Trikk/Xaak/Xaak squadron of doom and was unpleasantly surprised by the obscene amount of damage they can dish out!
This prompted a few turns of running away and healing by the big Shadow vessel. The Shadow fleet (the Ancient had two Stalkers as support) had taken refuge behind a dust cloud, but my fleet - including a dozen Tzymms - eventually penned them in and forced Andy to re-engage.
The Ancient vessel obliterated the lone Xeel Carrier, but then took well over a 100 points of damage from my squadron. The Stalkers were blasted by the Tzymms, and the Ancient ship was eventually finished off.

Four great games against four great opponents (well, three and Digger   ) Just a shame that I couldn't do well enough to keep Greg and Neil apart for the decider again...

Next one will be better organised, and have prizes... I promise

I hate Vree :D

Kenny your Vree fleet is sick!

In one round of shooting your 3 ship squadron threw 68 dice doing over 130 points of damage! Admittedly most of it was DD and apparently approx par! :(

Your Vree came to Walsall to "chew bubblegum and kick arse" and they were definitely out of bubblegum on the day!

However, I will have my revenge...... in this life or the next!

I wonder how many other film quotes I can fit in to my posts
