Steve Cole is looking for submissions for "funky Federation ships". He's looking for something different, so here's your chance to make the Feds look more interesting. :)

coming up with something new that meets the current design styles is almost impossible. The best designs have probably been done. The only way to go would be a total design shift for fed and kligons much similar to the hawk designs of the romulans.

I think the standard saucer + engineering hull is causing alot of issues. Id like to see maybe a few ships from the vulcan or andorian ship yards put into service due to construction issues with the standard ship yards.

I have a couple of ideas for new ships, although I'm not sure if they would mesh with existing fluff. I'll see if I can articulate them in images at some point.

SVC did state that Saucer and Nacells were required. Its a Fed Thing like Booms are a Klink thing.

Do they have to be saucer-and-nacelle designs?

Yes, saucer of some kind and nacells of some kind. For marketing purposes, nothing else will do. People must instantly say "Federation" when the ship is seen.

I think it's perfectly doable. The trick is to not just identically copy pre-existing designs from elsewhere in the franchise. It could serve for good inspiration on different approaches to the same general design aesthetic, though. Especially taking a look at Star Trek Online, which has every Starfleet franchise ship used, plus several dozen completely original designs, and virtually all of them look great.

You can see a full compilation chart at http://spidermitch1.com/sto/fed/SpidermitchFEDShipChart.jpg

I'm working on some sketches right now that just experiment with alternative saucer designs, nacelle counts and placement, and possibly some other stuff I can think of. I'll scan 'em and put them up when I have a few done.
