A New Gaim :)

Funny Ripple in my area we don't allow people to use counters, as long as you can help it. ( we have a horrible wait for product) Most of the power gamers still play 40k around here. And that was my point. People who love the universe will buy more becasue there is so much to love. Power gamers don't, along with people that want to buy 5 fleets don't on average get as much as people that slowly go from one to the other. In time that changes. We have a guy that has over a grand in bone heads.

Any other thoughts - might post a version 2 tonight - whilst its not as if its an official thing it would be nice to be able to say - this is perhaps a version of the Gaim that many of us are happier with - playing with or against.

:D

Did you put in LDTD's idea that crewed missiles always explode the turn after they convert - whether they manage to attack or not? Makes a lot of sense to me. Can't go flying around with an overloaded engine core for long...

I have to agree with the limitation on queen ships...

Suggestion.... Minimum of 1 queen ship, and a maximum of 1 fleet allocation point of queen ships....

There is a "fluff" argument but then you could say the same about other "rare" ships - one of the Vree scouts, Explorer's, Motherships and others - question becomes do we want to go down that route - not against it myself.................. :)

Actually I kind of like the 'Hive ship' idea.
Sort of like a central nest holding the 'Queen of queens'.
It would actually make sense given the structure of ant/bee colonies, which is what the Gaim are loosely based upon.

Problem with unique is that once the ship is killed, you can't make another one in campaigns. You'd need a special rule that you can have more than one in your fleet, but can only field one per battle. The question would then be asked, "why can't I field more than one if I want to? I paid the RR to buy them!". One answe would be that you can't have more than one active at a time but you can replace it when lost.

Then there would have to be a hive ship of each PL (or at least several PLs) so that it could be fielded in Patrol scenarios as well as War ones. So your campaign fleet would include the low level one as well as the high level one. So why couldn't you field both in a Raid game if you wanted..... after all Drazi can field all 10 Solarhawks in existance at once if they want to!

I was sort of thinking along those lines with the War level ship - may need to make it a bit more special................... :)

For representing that some ships are rarer/more important than their priority level suggests, I'm happy with the double VP rule which the queens already have. If I had my way, that rule would also be applied to ships like the Explorer class.

I was thinking (yeah ok no laughing) that a hive ship has something like hive mind and if that ship goes kabluie the whole fleet goes into dissaray

sort of do that now if loose all Queens - but the flight computer trait removes the actual effect way too easily..................now that that is removed :)

Quick and simple answer to this, only one "empress" may be alive that a time.

I find the gaim remind me of the formics from the ender series, when a new queen was "born" the current queen would have to subdue the new arrival, so the queen of queens would continue here "reign" but if the new queen proved more "powerful" this new queen would take over.

I can see this sort of thing happening for the gaim.

but back to burgers comment, if you did go with the above, it would prohibit more than one hive queen/empress.

in my opinion there should be a armageddon level "super" hive ship, then a hive ship at war, with the option to upgrading the other queenships to hive queen status, much like having an admiral in the other fleets.

IIRC the Gaim have 12 primary queens at any one time (am playing a Gaim in B5 RPG at present) so there are a number of them

I am little less convinced their are enough of them to command lots of ships but there may be more info to come in the rpg supplement. From what I understand the ships are likely to be manned by erratics (drones bred to have larger degree of free will but still serve the hive) in the absence of a Queen.

Ahh you gave me a good idea hegemon...

Rather than having Queen ships, the "Queen" works like an Admiral. By default, all Gaim ships are hull 4. A Gaim fleet must always have 1 Queen in its fleet. If the Queen is killed in a campaign, a new one is automatically regrown.

The Queen must always be present to control the fleet. She will increase the PL of a ship by 1, same as an admiral, but she doesn't necessarily have to be on the highest PL ship of the fleet. Instead of the usual admiral abilities, the Queen will have the following:
- Hull increases to 6
- CQ will increase +1 while the Queen is on board
- All ships on the table use the Queen ship's CQ, same as currently
- Same CQ penalty for losing the queen as currently
- VPs for destroying the Queen ship are VPs of the ship's new level (ie 1 level higher than the ship normally is)

How's that? :D
