Right Hand of God
Mongoose
It's nearly 3 years since a very good friend of mine everso gently twisted my arm in the local Forbiden Plannet Store, he walked out with the Shadow fleet box set, I picked up the Centauri fleet box. The following weekend after several hours manic gluing, filing, drilling and painting, (the painting was easier for him because he sprayed them black and that was that) we had our first of many games.
I can't remember the points level but my fleet consisted of every ship from the Centauri box set. Now my mate and I have gamed together for many years and had some truely memorable fights, 40K, Warhammer fantasy, Napoleonics, Warmaster, WW2 10mm, FOW. The games have always been played in good spirit, competitively fought but never losing sight of the fact that it's the fun that counts. Alot of our games have contained those moments that get recalled over a pint when we all meet up. SpaceWolf Scouts charging a Tyranid Horde and winning, rolling 17 dice needing 4+ to hit and getting only one, A Bretonian Lance formation charging a unit of undead and inflicting 36 wounds on a regiment of 20 skellies and the Vampire General, Chiggy Von Richtohven flying FW190s and Me109s taking out batteries of 155mm Artillery pieces in successive games only to turn tail and run for safety chased by countless spitfires that could never inflict the final wound and so we come to our first game of ACTA.
First game, first turn, first shot, and he rolls a 6-6 crit against my primus and blows it of the board with an instant death shot!Og great I thought, this is fun! Not! I mean, come on.... what do you mean there's no save? Hang on a minute my huge great Battleship is just destroyed? Marvellous! He pretty much blew me out of the sky in that game. Well, all apart from 1 Centurian that stubornly refused to die, surrounded by Scouts and Crusiers, with no guns, only able to move 2 inches a turn it took everything he could throw at it and still made it to the end of the game, much to his disgust.
And we were hooked. There isn't a fleet that we don't own between us, and nearly every game has one of those moments. Vree wiping Dilgar from the board with almost no losses. 3 Vorlon Heavy Cruisers destroying 6 undamaged Omegas in one round of firing. Sharlins movng last and managing to park in the Foward and Aft boresight of the same Omega! Whitestars out manouvreing a Centauri fleet and inflicting the death of a thousand gnat bites. On and on.
So this weekend, to celebrate the death of the first edition of ACTA we are recreating our first game. Centauri v Shadows. A last ride out for the Centauri in all it's beamy goodness, against the still only undercoated black menace of the Shadow fleet. 12 points of War in a battle to the death. A fitting end to 3 years of fun as we wait to get our hands on the new edition. If I remember, I try and take some pics.
