A farewell to Arms

It's nearly 3 years since a very good friend of mine everso gently twisted my arm in the local Forbiden Plannet Store, he walked out with the Shadow fleet box set, I picked up the Centauri fleet box. The following weekend after several hours manic gluing, filing, drilling and painting, (the painting was easier for him because he sprayed them black and that was that) we had our first of many games.

I can't remember the points level but my fleet consisted of every ship from the Centauri box set. Now my mate and I have gamed together for many years and had some truely memorable fights, 40K, Warhammer fantasy, Napoleonics, Warmaster, WW2 10mm, FOW. The games have always been played in good spirit, competitively fought but never losing sight of the fact that it's the fun that counts. Alot of our games have contained those moments that get recalled over a pint when we all meet up. SpaceWolf Scouts charging a Tyranid Horde and winning, rolling 17 dice needing 4+ to hit and getting only one, A Bretonian Lance formation charging a unit of undead and inflicting 36 wounds on a regiment of 20 skellies and the Vampire General, Chiggy Von Richtohven flying FW190s and Me109s taking out batteries of 155mm Artillery pieces in successive games only to turn tail and run for safety chased by countless spitfires that could never inflict the final wound and so we come to our first game of ACTA.

First game, first turn, first shot, and he rolls a 6-6 crit against my primus and blows it of the board with an instant death shot!Og great I thought, this is fun! Not! I mean, come on.... what do you mean there's no save? Hang on a minute my huge great Battleship is just destroyed? Marvellous! He pretty much blew me out of the sky in that game. Well, all apart from 1 Centurian that stubornly refused to die, surrounded by Scouts and Crusiers, with no guns, only able to move 2 inches a turn it took everything he could throw at it and still made it to the end of the game, much to his disgust.

And we were hooked. There isn't a fleet that we don't own between us, and nearly every game has one of those moments. Vree wiping Dilgar from the board with almost no losses. 3 Vorlon Heavy Cruisers destroying 6 undamaged Omegas in one round of firing. Sharlins movng last and managing to park in the Foward and Aft boresight of the same Omega! Whitestars out manouvreing a Centauri fleet and inflicting the death of a thousand gnat bites. On and on.

So this weekend, to celebrate the death of the first edition of ACTA we are recreating our first game. Centauri v Shadows. A last ride out for the Centauri in all it's beamy goodness, against the still only undercoated black menace of the Shadow fleet. 12 points of War in a battle to the death. A fitting end to 3 years of fun as we wait to get our hands on the new edition. If I remember, I try and take some pics.

Sounds like you guys had your moments 8)

I'd love to see some pictures, 12 points war on a table must be something.

The fan head beam team so far looks like

1 Adira = 2 points
2 Octurians = 2 points
1 Belvarix + 1 Magnus + 2 Vorchar = 1 point
1 Belvarix + 1 Magnus + 2 Vorchar = 1 point
1 Tertius + 1 Magnus + 2 Vorchat = 1 point
1 Tertius + 2 Prefects = 1 point
1 Tertius + 1 Prefect + 1 Solust = 1 point
1 Tertius + 2 Dargans = 1 point
1 Tertius + 2 Solusts = 1 point
1 tertius + Dusk Coutari = 1 point

Cry Havoc and let loose the dogs of war!

 yes it is isn't it. For 12 points of War aganst the shadows I figure I'll be facing 2 or 3 shadow Crusiers, 4 hunters and the rest scouts. With almost no rear firing weapons I wil need to do the maximum amount of damage as quickly as possible.

Da-dada da dah dah :D

Only works if you know the tune already though doesn't it.

Considering it's shadows I am not sure how to balance it any further. I should be able to take down his fighter screen with mine, and then use the remainder along with the heavy hitters to wear down his cruisers while my escorts take on his scouts. The only thing that worries me is his hunters

To mark the occassion I have a similar story.

For 8 years I played 40k. It was my passion. I started with Dark Angels and then moved on to Eldar. After a bit of disgust I decided that Tyranids were more my flavour. I played them to the end. In the mean time I built a Chaos army, and Imperial guard army and then moved back to Dark Angels. I had nearly 8000pts of the bugs and 5500pts of Dark Angels. I dreamed of running a mega battle were 12x 750pt armies tried to demolish my 9000pt army (a small dream). It was not to be though. A situation that should not have been allowed developed between me and the demo teams for GW did develop. I can no longer play the game in any official capacity. My friends had stopped playing long ago, so technically I can not play it in an unofficial capacity either.

Last year though I was introduced to Babylon 5 by John Buckmaster, a former MI trooper. I joined the Mongoose infantry and began to demonstrate the game. I have built up a following for the game here and I am concidering taking the game to other cities. Recently I got the SST's core box set as a gift. After reading just the first 10 pages of the rule book I am an instant fan. I have an EA fleet for each of the three era's and a brakiri fleet.

I will be running a Babylon 5 event on August 11th. It will consist of a small demo and an ancient level battle for all to participate. We will give 1st ed a send off to remember. And there will be pictures!

well a farewell to arms for RHOG,i have one more game to play of 1st ed, before the 2nd ed is out,for those of us that have to wait for it to hit the shops.

well centauri v shadows 12pts war.
well there were a few mistakes on each side, mine was not realising until the fighters had started shooting that i had forgot to do my scout lock-ons for turn 2 :(
RHOGs forgetting to jump his adira and 6 tertius for the game although he did open a jump point in the final turn .
but even with 5pts handicap the centuri still won and quite easily too.
losses were
centuri 10 fighters,1octurian,1sulust,1dargan and 2 vorchat.
shadows 36 fighters 1 hunter and 1 cruiser.
it was worked out at 30pts v 66pts
a clear win for the centauri ,and the perfect way to finish 1st ed with my friend as it leaves the centauri/shadow score at 1win and a draw each
what better way to finish it off :D
RHOG took some picture's and should be putting them up at some point.

oh and one last think this "vree wiping dilgar from the board with almost no loss'es"just a few thing's in my defence .
1.turn 1 i lost 3 of my 4 scouts from the shot of one ship  ,the shot hit the lead jashakar blowing it up, the explosion took out the other 2 :(
2. the only ships i could see (as the rest were well out of range)were scout's,which as history has shown,if some one tells me there stealth 5 my dice become scared and fail nearly every stealth check they have to take  .
3.i did the breaching pods wrong they got on board a xaak but in the same turn one of my rohrics exploded, taking out my breaching pods,i now know my troops were actually safe, and outnumbered the troops of the xaak(ok only 2-1 but hay its good odds)
4.i still had 2 tikrit and 2 ochlavita left (they were not wiped out so nerrrr)
5.and i killed 5 ships not bad as the main fleet was hidding on the other side of the board .
6.i beg the forgiveness of my dilgar bretheren, what ship should i have taken?
which one ?
which one would have helped me out no end ???
"T A R G R A T H" i hear them shout and i didn't take one not one (as this was my second game,in my first game against my good friend
darkblade he murdered my targrath with his drazi before they really did anything so i was left thinking they were rubbish)((temperary space maddness loss of your home world can do it,lol))
so i just wanted to shed some light on that game it was hardly sandhurst material ,if you want sandhurst material ask RHOG about our last 2 vorlon v earth alliance games or as i call them the vorlon turkey shoots
p.s.i have made up for the targrath debacle i now have 6 acta scale and 18 aog scale, a rematch with the vree is being arrange 2nd ed style.

I thougt we wern't going to mention the Vorlon EA games any more? One big banana chomp fest. Neither of those are the games where the Heavy Crusiers jumped in infront of your omegas and blew them asll up though is it?

In our last Vorlon v EA game Meglos used his iniiative sinks to completely out manouvre me. He jumped in a lot of ships behind my heavy crusiers and just followed e around the board blasting ne to death whilst ~I couldn't get hm into my line of sight, the ships I could see I couldn't hit and a battleship with only one weapon an AP beam is a joke against a fleet of hull 6 ships. Hopefully 2nd ed will encourage a rematch between these two fleets because there is certainly a grudge building up between them.

As for the Vree dilgar, killed your ugly green ships and probed all those dilgar that survived till they couldn't walk straight! :D

fotos and notes of the shadow v centauri to come shortly
