A bit underwhelmed

Gravmonkey

Mongoose
Hello all,

I've just received my Spinward Marches map pack (of which I also foolishly pre-ordered my copy of the Campaign Guide which will be out in 2-3 months?) and I have to say I'm a little disappointed. The quality of the map is quite good but I guess I was expecting a little more for ten dollars+shipping. I got a nice map for sure but for some dumb reason I thought my hard-earned would get me a bit more. I suppose its the gamer's/working stiff's lament. Don't get me wrong, I am still a strong supporter of Mongoose, I had hoped for a little more. Maybe something to go with the map. Maybe fleet strengths in Rhylanor, or Pirate activity in Regina. Something. Well, it is a very nice map.

Not trying to belittle your situation here, I'm a working stiff myself, but that $10 + s&h isn't much comparatively. You could buy 2 paperback novels with that (maybe), get a movie ticket + a medium soda or popcorn, or buy a meal at a family restaurant for about the same money.

I'll agree with some of the others and say you perhaps are just out of the loop on pricing in the industry right now. It's hard to get a good GM screen for under 20 bucks, and a lot of pre canned adventures fall into the 15 to 25 bucks range.

So, my reaction to the pricing on the map packs was the exact opposite. I had to double check to make sure the list price was correct as an entire sector, in full color, with all those little symbols struck me as a surpisingly good deal. And I'm not even thinking of buying them anytime soon.

I'm fairly certain that it's actually cheaper to buy the pack than printing out the PDF version in full color and getting it laminated, though they might be close.

Its full color (effectively) on very hi quality (thick/sturdy) paper.

Unfortunately it isn't cheap now a days. Paper prices have gone up dramatically just like everything else.

Combine that with being priced for a 3-tier system, you get a $10 retail price.

Realize that with any such product, Mongoose is actually getting only about 1/3 of the retail price, unless you order directly from them.

I'm curious, are these maps the same size as the original Traveller sector maps that came in some of the boxed sets?

Nope, new one is a little bit larger.

I bought both the SM and Trojan Reaches maps. I'm quite pleased with my purchase. To purchase the PDF ($6) and print it at Kinkos would cost me way more than what I paid for them (including shipping).

Larger and better quality. My old Traveller maps are starting to disintegrate from the acid in the paper - and I took good care of them too.

Posters where I live are $15-20CDN, so I'm quite happy with the purchase.

I know how that goes, my Spinward Marches map has been almost entirely sitting in the box it came in but has faded some and a bit of white around the folds in the map.

Though I do like the thicker paper of the old one.
