40K

Untill now it was science fiction, but maybe its worth placing a bid on a 40K license, now that Black Industries are shutting their doors.

At a guess I would suggest that if GW did offer the licence (and that in itself would be extremely unlikely) the resultant asking price would be far too prohibitive for any company to turn a profit on it.

I'm speculating here, but it seems pretty plain that the costs of producing such a high quality book as Dark Heresy (I'm assuming it is, though I haven't seen a physical copy) have seen the profit margin become so small that GW has decided to ditch it as a bad investment. We all know that RPGs don't make a huge amount of money, and it's quite plain that despite DH selling out everywhere in mere hours, it still wasn't enough to ensure BI's survival. GW, being so protective of its IP and the production values of its products, would undoubtedly demand a similar standard from its licensees. One that would make the procurement of the licence more curse than boon.

That was fast. I just bought the book a week ago and now they announce that the whole department will shut it's doors.

Too bad on the people who made the book and I guess that the license won't be up for grabs for a long time. My humble guess is that if anyone will get it it is those who wrote DH should they start their own company and get enough capita to get the license.

yeah, GW isnt traditionally very friendly to licensors. Anyone remember Marauder and Armorcast ?

As I understood it, Marauder was always closely linked to GW and all that happened was GW bought it back. There is a snippet on it in this article

It would be nice if Mongoose picked up the WH40KRP and WFRP licences, but I guess they would need to look at the strings GW would no doubt attach to them.

That said, with Runequest, Paranoia, Traveller, B5, Conan and Judge Dredd already under the Mongoose banner there would be a serious danger of Matthew Sprange running around shouting "all your bases are belong to us!" if they snaffled the Warhammer licenses as well.

On a more serious note, I'm not sure how easy it would be to support WFRP & WH40KRP alongside so many other popular RPGs without either diverting a lot of support away from the existing licenses or investing a fair chunk of extra capital.

More importantly, someone needs to save WFRP from fading into obscurity yet again!

Is DH actually out yet?

But yeah, it would be awesome if Mongoose could snag that one...

The publisher sold out the first print run on January 22nd, a few days after its release

Still two copies down at FP in Leicester. *Knows 'cause he took the thiird one*

Go to the BI website, any ROG forum and you will probably see discussion about their announcement.

Black Industries is being closed down by GW at the end of Sept. No more DH or WHFRP after that date.

I sem to be missing something here. What happened with dark heresy and black industires?

My interpretation of what is up on their site is that it was decided the novel part of the business makes a lot of money and has had a lot of growth, so they have decided to close all other aspects down and concentrate on that. They claim the RPG stuff was making money, but it obviously wasn't enough from a business stand point. It seems much like GW did when they decided that even though the specialist games were making money (mordheim, warmaster, epic, bloodbowl, etc...) they would pretty much stop making/supporting them and concentrate on the main lines because there is more money in them.

Well Hogshead managed to licence WFRP for how many years? 5,6?

Certainly GW have successfully licenced out their RPG rights before, and if the price is right, then I cant see any reason why it wouldnt happen again.

After all, got to fill in the GW budget hole somehow! -

Games Workshop in the red

Date: Tuesday 22 Jan 2008

LONDON (ShareCast) - War gaming model specialist Games Workshop swung into the red at the half way stage, although it said the figures were “encouraging”.

The group reported a loss before tax of £192,000 for the six months to 2 December versus a £127,000 profit the year before on revenue unchanged at £54.6m.

“We have re-established constant currency sales growth in the UK, the Americas and Asia Pacific, our gross margins remain strong, and our cost reduction programme is delivering the overhead reductions we expected,” said the company.

“The directors firmly believe that the prospects for the business remain very good,” it added.

Once again, there will be no dividend, with the firm using the cash to finance the ongoing cost reduction programme.

“The board remains confident in the future growth and profitability of the group and will resume paying dividends when appropriate,” it said.

they always get rid of what sells well, like purple ink, boltgun spray .....

They got rid of purple ink? Losing orange ink wasn't that much of a surprise but now purple's gone as well?

got 3, 2 weeks back from my local hobby store. flying bases are direct sale still no reply to my email from yesterday.

All the bases are being re-packaged into packs with multiple kinds of bases in them. It sucks that when GW does something new they "cancel" the old product like 6 months before the new one comes out.

Unless Mongoose can fix the problem with their quality of the books then I don't want them getting the licence. The last thing I want to see is the Dark Heresy book falling apart because of a bad job on the binding. If they get 40k then they will have to improve on that alot otherwise they will imo turn away many fans. The books published for GW were for the most part in color and of the highest quality they would need to match that.

Not to mention that switching from a full color interior to a black and white one would be a step back imo. Another problem is that they need to get both Warhammer Fantasy roleplay and Warhammer 40k. You can bet that as soon as Mongoose announces that they have the 40K licence fans of the WFRP will be asking them to get that one also. So if they do invest they need to make sure they can afford to get both as imo they will need both.

I wonder who will be getting the rights to DC superheroes rpg as that was the next licence that BI was supposed to be working on.

I'll throw my hat into the ring on this one.

Having recently got back into painting miniatures I have been going to my local GW store for paint and some GW products [though I am mainly a Reaper Mini fan]

I bought the Novel Horus Rising and have been really enjoying it. I was all set to buy the RPG when I read they axed it. I don't want to buy into a dead game.

If Mongoose picked this sucker up I'd buy into it. Overall I have been happy with my Mongoose purchases over the years and there is certainly a lot of potential in books for a 40k game. Race books like the B5 ones on Orks, Tau, Eldar etc. Adventures, A ship book, Source material from the novels. I was a fan of WEG source books on the Star Wars novels.

I'd buy into this no worries,
