3rd Space

Thanks for the comments Hindsight.

Job has obviously been kept you very busy recently. Presume the new introductory product is going very well. After many years abstinance from that particualr system, even I could not resist the value for money.

Bought my box yesterday and I am very pleased. Despite once vowing never to return, not only am I back but already planning my next spends.

The article draft itself is finshed, I am still however in the middle of building the second model and taking photographs of the build process.

I apologise for the delay versus my original delivery schedule but unfortunately some unexpected & serious, family related, real life issues have recently been taking up all of my spare time.

What little free time that I currently have for modeling and gaming is being devoted to finishing the 3rd space cruiser build, (I too want to see official stats for the ship) and I still hope to get the article with photographs submitted to Mongoose before the end of Nov.

I will keep you all posted on progress.

Da Boss - when the 3rd space cruiser is finished I will hopefully get back on to the model photograph schedule I promised for you.

Hooray. Soon I can add another project to my already long list of projects in the process of being cmpleted. I will sit here waiting impatiently for more news.
*Sits down and stares at computer, repeatedly tapping refresh.*

To keep my promise of an update and more importantly to save Arch Lector Petrovski's mouse from an untimely death, (if its not already too late)

Current status - Main parts of 2nd model now completed. Still to build a blue crystal structure, paint the purple effect on the central sphere, assemble the 4 main parts and detail paint, (what detail), the rest of the ship.

In other words the model will be completed and article photos finished over the weekend.

Will then do final polish on my first draft, so unless something unforseen happens, (and with my record that happens far too regularly - see next paragraph), I will be submitting article for consideration on Tuesday 2nd.

Unforseen events in the life of a Kickaha- (number 667) -

1.Have a look at my original model photos above, notice that number 5 is taken at an odd angle.
2.Look at bottom right corner. See the black shape.
3.Recognise that it is a corner of a model vice holding the ship for the photo.

yes - between photos 4 & 5 I dropped the original model onto a wooden floor, (4 foot drop), it bounced several times and rolled 10 feet over the floor.

The ship survived without even a scratch but the base completly shattered into about 7 or 8 pieces.

And you know the funny thing - each broken piece of the base had a strange, non-Euclidean, geometry which was clearly........................... not of this world.

Most impressive - I want one!
When the article is released I might try a lit up one... if it's simple enough for my rusty modelling skills

Great suggestion Burger, was hoping you might say that.

In my case it is my electronic and soldering skills that are well rusty.,

Bought a voyager model years ago with the aim of kitting it all with running lights, flashing lights, internal lighting and warp engine effect.
Bought a long list of components from RS, built one warp engine, (looked great), and even soldered up a flashing circuit, (copied from a modeling article I should add), for the white leds however I became focused on a new job at the time and the ship has been up my loft ever since.

Lighting the 3rd space model sphere and blue crystal would be a fantastic add in /on.

Looking forward to your lighted version and your teach-in doc.

(edit - very ham fisted today on content)

Well I have been away from the forum for a few days and just read the CTA announcment.

I guess that definitely falls into "Unforseen Event number 668 in the Life of a Kickaha."

Very, very sad news indeed.

I originally came to CTA purely for the B5 element.

In any case, to let you know, I have just now submitted my draft for the model build article to Charlie Law. Of course I don't know now if it will ever now see the light of day in S&P.

Here's to a Babless CTA 3rd edition.

3rd Space Fighters,

I have been considering this now for some time;

I made a half? joking comment at the end of my article which you will see hopefully later.

More seriously, I have given a lot of thought to other ships for a Third Space fleet, but sticking here to the canon "fighter" only, the first point of note is that the "fighter" appears in two different sizes, (in what I guess is a CGI error), in the movie. In one case its size for size with a Starfury and in the second about the same size as the front rounded section of a Whitestar. In CTA terms this could be two different PL's of ships of similar design, say a fighter and a frigate.

For the "fighter" version, unfortunately I can only see sculpting as the answer.

The "frigate" however could be made with a few bits and pieces.

Either way the fighter/frigate ship consists of;

1. An asymetrical plate type structure at the back with 5 "wings". (Edit - on checking my file notes, slightly more complex than I remembered - actually two plates each of 3 wings.

Viewed from the front, 2 sets of the wings on the 2 plates overlap one pair just slightly, the other almost completely, (looking almost like a single wing). The third set of wings don't overlap at all, hence from the front looks like 5 wings.

Easy to make with styrene sheet.

2 In the centre of the plates there is structure with a small sphere in front of it, "black hole?"

3. There is then a rod structrure / gun coming out of centreline of the sphere, again easy to make.

That leaves two more problematical areas left.

4. 3 leaf type structures, one larger extending down one side of the ship with a couple of thinner "leaves" top and bottom.

(My half joke comment in the article defines one potential solution for this). Other more relastic ideas would be sculpting or shaping 3 small thin pieces of styrene and scribing, or just painting, on some detail where necesary. Definitely feasible and either should look very good.

5. Last item is around tendrils near the prow of the ship, very thin wire would probably be my option here. Probably the most difficult part to model correctly & probably not really necessary for gaming, depends really only on the level detail you are looking for.

Hope this sparks a few ideas. I will get around to modeling some myself probably late this year / early next year.

Here is my first attempt at a 3rd Space Fighter/Frigate, ready slightly ahead of my plan for once.

Took the shots at my coffee break this morning so not the best of quality.

No chance to show scale in the photos but a couple of size references;

Total length 20mm approx. The white ball in the centre is actually a map pin. The brass rod holding the ship up is 1.2mm in diam. The base is the smallest type for CTA , nicked from one of my, to be based, Maximus' / Maximi / Maximums..... sod it - Maximussies)

Will paint it up and repost probably after the weekend.

For the record the "leaves" are cut & shaped metal from an Aluminium can, (30 minutes all in for the 3 this morning), wonderful scratchbuilding material. (But for reasons of good taste, literally, remember to throw the beverage away first).

If my 3rd Space Cruiser article is judged of sufficient quality standard to appear in S&P, (never underestimate how poorly I can write and/or explain things). Then I can certainly pen a follow up on scratchbuilding the fighter/frigate, if people are interested.

[By the way decided to omit the front "fronds" as being probably to fragile for the gaming table. May try later but will have to source some very fine wire first].

Those are some stunning ships you have made there. They really look like the 3rd space ships.

I hope that the article you submitted sees the light of day.

Thanks for the comments guys.

3 of these escorting the cruiser should make a really nice shot. Well done :D

See what I can do. the scratchbuild process for the fighter/frigate is suprisingly fast, especially since I made a template for the rear fins. It was the planning process that took the time.

Just for the sake of it, I've decided to post a link to Bebo, where I documented my own design of the Thirdspace fighter.

I never thought it would get any recognition because I felt the "community" here was very bigotry (I wanna say "racist", but that's probably too strong). It was certainly idealistic, seeing as I wanted an Armageddon ship for the Dilgar (fool I was ;))

But here u go - I actually had a go - view here

Not that I expect many people to comment - the public line seems to be to ignore people that actually care about the game enough to do something about it, yet complain when they do.
