300

Horse hair helmet action. It realy looks like how imagined Gloranthan adventures when I first started playing RQ II.

I was looking at my old RQ Citidel Adventure figures last night infact. The Orlanthi with the greatsword was so cool, along with the Humakti or maybe the Yelmalian with the big cloak and javilin.

Anyone know if Mongoose are doing any more RQ figures? Maybe EWF dragon armour guys. They would be cool.

Just in case all y'all haven't seen it yet there's a new longer trailer for 300 online at http://300themovie.warnerbros.com/ ...

Looks good. Hopefully it won't be Troy or Alexander. I aaw Troy with a bunch of Classicists and they were all frothing at the mouth by the end of it. It would have been funny except I had to watch Troy too.

I was gutted to learn that the Thermopylae story being told was Miller's version and not Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield. I'm swallowing my irritation and just accepting the fact it's not remotely historical, it has nothing much about the real Spartans and it's essentially a vastly exaggerated retelling of the whole thing.

Unfortunately, I'm still of the mind that in this instance, the truth is more interesting. And it was certainly bloodier.

Yes, exactly my point. That was my problem with Troy. There was no need to change the Illiad. None. Nothing that Hollywood could do can equal that story, I think. So why change it?

Or Alexander for that matter. Why the heck couldn't they have him get mortally wounded on the walls of Chowpatty as he mistook himself for Achillies? So much coolness ignored for a battle in blood-o-vision...

It is based on a Frank Miller graphic novel. As such expect it to focus on emphasing over the top heroics and atmosphere over 'realism' (I say that in a good way).

He's the guy who wrote Sin City, so if you've seen that you get an idea of what to expect. Of course, I don't expect 300 to pretend to be a historicaly accurate representation of Spartan warfare. I do expect it to be a rip-roaring good time if it is even half as good as Sin City.

I know, but it's still disappointing for me. Imagine there was this thing you really liked. And then someone writes about that thing, doing what is critically regarded as the best interpretation of it, ever. You love the thing, and you love their interpretation of the thing, which is faithful and beautiful.

Then imagine someone else does their interpretation - one you don't like and misses out some of the coolest stuff about the thing - and that's the interpretation that gets made into the Hollywood movie.

That's how I feel. Thermopylae, see, that was my thing. And I'm gutted the interpretation of it that the wide world sees will be one I regard as inferior, lackingin a lot of what made the great battle so awesome anyway.

That is why I emphasised that at least it does not pretend to be historically acurate. I love history and have a real problem with movies that 'pretend' to be historically accurate. Troy and Alexander, the new King Arthur, etc. etc. At least 300 is obvious in that it is an over the top comic representation of the battle.

But I feel your pain. Not all war movies can be Gettysburg. Or Band of Brothers. But it sure would be nice if more tried.

Ahhh. Yeah, sorry, I think I'm having a dense day. I see where you're at now.

In no way did I expect this film to have anything to do with historical accuracy - nothing Hollywood produces will EVER come anywhere near ...

I mean, the Iliad opens in the 10th year of the war, Troy did it all in two weeks!!!

No, it's 300's fantastic visualization that makes it so appealing for me. As soon as I saw the teaser trailer my reaction was "Now that's RQ", not "Wow that's Thermopylae". You need to watch the History channel if you want any degree of realism, 300 is pure fantasy.

The main worry is how many people will watch it and assume it has anything to do with how things happened. We had enough of that with friggen "The Patriot"

But if it has ancient mega-battle action, it'll be usefull for gamers at least :)

Heh. My wife's office is in the building that was supposed to be the state legislature in that movie - Randolph Hall on the College of Charleston campus. Oddly enough, the building was built before the revolution.
