2300AD: Ship design Clarke Class Explorer

Guess I'll add my "I Likes It!" here too for a more public kudo. Looking sharp :)

A side question occurs to me now, have you stuck with the vectored thrust engines of the inspiration? That would be more in keeping with 2300 tech wouldn't it? Not to mention being kewl :) (but kewl with a purpose). Just curious, I kinda lost track of the thread and build so I might have missed an obvious answer.

EDIT: Ah, never mind, there it is in plain sight in the design writeup, "VTOL"... kewl :)

Superb. Going to have to see if I can cadge a class off you in this stuff at some point.

I still need to have a try at doing the Icebox-class and the Type Arrr.

Even better!

(Like the VTOL - though does look a wee bit smallish...)

I was wondering how you were going to visual the VTOL :)

I agree, seems a bit small, and badly (or entirely un-) balanced. Unless... are those dark areas (4 of them) on the lower deck additional ducted fan outlets?

EDIT: Ah, no, probably landing pylons... still, they could do double duty ;)

If it any help those vtol engines around around 6 metres tall.

Actually thinking I can run some exhaust ports to the lower deck

Port(s) forward/center would help 'balance' things...

Seeing it in 3D would probably help

Yep to both :)

...my typical hashed up quick-n-dirty cut-n-paste bastardized tweak of your fine work:

Something like...

Like it, though those forward bit are the solar panel array folder or something... I'm just routing the vtol engines to the lower deck.. this is fun!

Do you remember the ship design (in an old 'White Dwarf') that was used in the 'Snowbird Mystery' (I think the ship was in #41 or #40)? I like the similar handling of the fuel tanks that you have.

Very nice to honor and remember the late Arthur C Clarke, but most vehicles in the Alien universe have been named for characters and locations from the works of author Joseph Conrad. There just seems to be a list of usual suspects when naming fan fiction starships and RPG starships.

Prometheus was a Titan from Greek mythology:

Many of the ships in the Wallenius Lines fleet are named for characters in opera:

USCSS stands for United States Commercial Space Ship in Alien. United States Commercial Star Ship in Prometheus. Pre-production concept artwork of Nostromo by Ron Cobb has the space ship being a Lockheed Bison transporter spaceframe. The Aliens Technical Manual has added Martin or Lockmart as the manufacturer. Perhaps UK-built, but United States registered.

Prometheus is a Heavy Exploration/Prospecting Vessel. Perhaps there are other members of the class, but Prometheus has the better analysis kit and luxury apartment.

I was thinking that I would want to name one of these starships USCSS Pourquoi Pas? (French for "Why not?") named for the French ships of Arctic and Antarctic exploration, the most famous being Pourquoi Pas ? IV:

Ah well this vessel is supposed to fit in 2300AD you see. I was trying to fit a Monolith in the flight patch...I must profess to being a fan of Arthur. Still one must wonder if any of his works survive the Twilight..

In fact the vessel is just inspired by the Prometheus, vaguely now. In fact its more like the design Cobb did for the Nostromo - the Snark!

Certainly do ! Makes them more interesting, same with the cargo bay, add some cases, hauling gear? and some other gubbins...

Remember I rebuilt the Hunter as the Huntress from White Dwarf....
