[2300AD] Bayern

I thought it was left open ended for adventure purposes. Every gaming group would have a different answer. Im not certain a canon hard-line answer was ever published. Maybe its better that way.

Canonically, did the Bayern ever return? What year? What happened to the ship?
According to 2320AD, also written by Colin Dunn, the Bayern returned
after its epic voyage in 2307 with informations about several previously
unknown alien species. After its return the route of the Bayern is known
as the Bayern Corridor, a new region of space opened up for further ex-
ploration and perhaps future colonization, although the area where the
AGRA Intelligence was encountered is now prohibited space.

2320AD contains many informations about what the Bayern found, but I
am not aware of any information about what happened to the ship itself
after its return.

Yes, I was aware the Colin declared that the Bayern had returned. I was unsure of the date of its return.

I sorta preferred its mission as clandestine and open ended—AGRA one of the sealed sovereign secrets of the 2300U; not picketed but secreted—but wondered what happened to the ship. Its design was pretty much obsolete even as it was laid down, but its carcass would make a pretty good space station.

Was thinking of building a scenario around the Bayern plans being stolen by the Chinese for their own top secret mission beyond the Arms.

By the way, in my 2300AD universe the ship is named "Kepler",
"Bayern" is just too unlikely for a ship built for a scientific mis-
sion. 8)

Had it been up to me, I would not likely have named it Bayern either.

The Bayern is able to do what is does through the use of disposable stutterwarp drives and a shipyard-scale drive tuner. A drive tuner uses technology similar to an actual stutterwarp to bring drives on-line and "align" them. While is uses on offset of the technology, a drive tuner does not build up a gravistatic charge, even when moving. Tuners are very large, however, on the order of 500 or more tons, so ships typically will not carry one.

In 2320, I had the Bayern return in 2307. It could well have taken longer, though likely not any shorter. When I played the adventure, back in the day, the ship suddenly reappeared in Earth orbit in 2305.

What do you imagine happened to the ship afterward? IM2300U, I'd basically assumed it never returned. Mystery.

Most likely, it was sold to a corp. and then retro-fitted with some upgrades and renamed and sent on another exploration mission...!

A couple of things strike me.

First, no matter what the realities of the mission, it seems the Bayern's trek would be officially deemed A Failure. So it could be buttoned up and filed away in some Indy Jones states secrets warehouse somewhere. I really don't see the Powers That Be wanting to admit to a lot of the stuff dredged up on that mission, and nobody spends a lot of time snooping around Failure. I generally estimated it would be a 60%+ casualties mission, so terming it a failure and tying it all around some patsie's neck seems appropriate—some innocents' lives destroyed and dragged through the dirt. The captain, court martialed, Dreyfus style, as only the French really can. The rest is the stuff of tabloid speculation.

Second, the German reunification seems to've occurred sometime while the Bayern was away.*

Third, I like the idea of the Bayern's obsolete hulk, stripped and driveless, returned to transPentapod space and parked at the inner threshold of the first 15.5 LY gap, a station and sad monument to mankind's folly in probing the Unknown.

*EDIT: oops, wrong about this. Weird then, all that talk of Bavaria in the module
