well just played my 1st game, 5pt raid RN versus the KM. the RN completely annihilated the german surface ships with some lucky crits on the Scharnhost and torpedo bombers, + torps from destroyers but the problem then was the 4 german subs. once you lose your destroyers nothing can kill subs and with a range 3 on depth charges the subs just did their surprise attack thing appearing in range for torps on dests but out of range for depth charges, obvioulsy killing both RN destroyers in the process.
torpedos seem very powerful thats for sure, and especially if you dont have a torpedo belt.
think if theres gonna be tourneys for VaS the organisers need to limit the amount of subs, 15 subs will beat anyone due to not having to appear on the surface and able to take out enemy destroyers straight away alot of the time.

one question came up as players of ACTA, when rolling damage, and hits are just against the damage score of the ship? not against the crew? is this correct? seems odd to have huge crew scores that only get effected by crits, but i guess its about right though cos crew generally didnt die that quick unless things exploded on board, or the ship sank :)

That is true, you do not take crew damage in addition to hull damage. However, we've houseruled it that way just for fun! That way fires can actually present a real danger to a ship.

Under the current rules, we had an Iowa class battleship with multiple fires on board for 7 consecutive turns and its crew wasn't seriously depleted.

Probably unrealistic the way we are doing it, but it seems a lot more fun to us!

Yes, very :) (see my earlier post on the subject of fires)

Don't forget that subs are placed at the begining of the movement phase so you have time to react to them. Admittedly that does give you some potentially crazy situations, especially with lots of boats in the water. VAS does allow the integration of subs and surface forces to a degree that admirals could only dream of in WW2 and which is very difficult to achieve even today (look out for DM "house rules" on ASW soon :) )
