Yeah, the Bismark is metal. What tipped me off was the difference in the mold line on the saucer edge; the metal version lacks the fine lip the two resin ones have. I prefer it.
When you say you've seperated out hypotheticals, are you talking only about the Z-plan, or are other nation's hypotheticals (e.g. Montana-class BB) included as well?

As I understand it, as long as it is in range at firing, it doesn't matter. The torpedo counter moves with the ship until it hits if the range is over 10".
I've no experience with other rulesets, but I understand that VaS is among the more streamlined sets, with (I think) General Quarters being among the most detailed. Thus VaS is well suited to fleet actions, while other rules might be better for skirmishes or ship on ship combat.
