Terrain pics-More Asteroids, dust clouds and a comet

I've finally finished all my Star Fleet terrain. I've got a 4' x' 6' star covered felt mat, multiple planets and moons, dust clouds, asteroids and a comet. They turned out great and now space looks fantastic. ;-)

Here are some shots of the completed space debris:

very very nice indeed ! did you use an air brush for the nebulas?
Didn't use an airbrush, just spray paint.

I had a bunch of cans of various, nearly fluorescent, colours kicking around from another project. I spot sprayed the various colors onto foam sheets (I also tried felt but it didn't look good). Then I cut out the shapes, and sprayed black "past" the edges so that it would over spill onto the shapes. It wasted a lot of black, but it gave a great effect.

When I get my website set up, I'll put some pics of building them.

Very nice work! The colours look very Original Series. I like the simple way of describing a comet, more robust and game-friendly than cotton wool.

Thanks.

I was trying to come up with a 3D comet and 3D dust clouds, but this seemed to look better. If I made cotton wool dust clouds, I'd want them to be colourful and re-position-able, like the asteroids.

Once I finished everything, I suddenly realized that I hadn't made a comet. Then I looked through my dust clouds and found one that was fairly comet shaped. It turns out I had made one after all.

The only thing I haven't made is a Gas Giant. I couldn't find a good, cheap, 1/2 sphere bigger than 10". Even my 6" styrofoam world cost $11.

Come fall look around for oversized Christmas ornaments. I've got a 6" ball I scavenged from when I worked retail I'm planning on doing some light putty work to clean up the surface of and paint as a gas giant. I bet you could find one up to a foot if you looked hard enough. Also those stupid looking lawn globes - they go up to 18" or so, can you get plastic or acrylic ones? Might be on the pricy side, but they're an option.

Has anyone considered paper mache yet? Seems it might be workable if one coated the halves of a large ball that can come apart (large hamster playball or something?). I'll have to see if I can come up with one of those cheaply.

I borrowed Red's idea of pumice rocks for asteroids. I'll post pics when they're done.

Also, I had to buy a 20-lb bag of pumice rocks for $6.00, far more than I'll ever need. If someone in the US wants a box of them, please do let me know. Shipping would be the biggest issue, but the price for the actual rocks will be pretty cheap. :D
