I agree with Tolwyn that Beams need better rules. I can't remember a single game where beams have added any fun to the game.
But they do have lots of dices at long range. Those missiles are 24". With APTE those missiles will be in range on turn 1. Once concentrated interceptors won't save your ships.

I'd like to get that option on my novas. Especially since against many fast fleets the nova can easily become a one shot wonder. Atleast you can make that 1 shot count.
