Wrath of the Ancients, page 44. There is a description of the benefits that a player can choose as a 'General Enhancement':
Each time a Traveller receives an uplift package they may also take a General Enhancement. The same one may be chosen multiple times:
• Increase any characteristic by +2
• Take 4 skill levels in any non-psionic skill or divide them between any non-psionic skills
• Increase any a psionic skill already possessed by +2 or gain level 1 in any new psionic skill
• Increase any special ability the Traveller possesses by +2
• Change paths
A Traveller who changes path may choose whether to gain their current package for this uplift incident and gain the 1st package in the new field next time, or to switch immediately and gain the 1st package now.
Which is all great as far as it goes. except page 167 contradicts it.
This is the place in the adventure where 'Revelation Index' (RI points) are described. A Traveller might accumulate RI points throughout the WotA campaign, and this page describes how they are spent to produce progress along the Uplift Paths.
First, the cost to 'Gain A New Path At Level 1' -- there is no mention of having to use up a General Enhancement, just 10 RI points. A player spending RI points this way ought to be gaining a General Enhancement, not using one up; and there is no mention here about being in any way 'locked into' any particular path.
Second, page 168 specifies 'It is expected that the Travellers will gain about 100 RI in the remainder of the campaign; enough to master one path or develop a broad base of abilities.' -- except all the possible rewards of RI are listed on page 170, and total up to 14D +12. Were there meant to be more RI awards specified throughout the campaign? It would make sense to scatter about 40 RI, as rewards after each scenario... but this is not mentioned.
There are also 'barriers' at each 100 RI, past which RI points can be accumulated but not spent. There are six barriers, and overcoming each as it is encountered allows the players to spend up to the next barrier. The campaign includes Ryau, a Drone on Braudel, who can help the Travellers past the first barrier. Page 266 'Revelations' allows Travellers to pass another barrier -- does the campaign really expect Travellers to accumulate 200+ RI points on 14D6+12? There seems to be something missing.
Third, there is a casual mention (page 107, under 'Psionic Intervention') of characters taking the 'Impose' Special Abilities as a possible choice of General Enhancement.
The Travellers might be able to experiment with pulling a G482 into a psionic nightmare. This is possible if they have the Impose ability, although they are unlikely to possess it yet; a Traveller might have taken the ability as a General benefit during their uplift process, in which case they can use it.
Trouble is, taking a Special Ability is not listed as a possible choice for General Enhancements -- nor is there an RI cost listed for taking just a General Enhancement or just a Special Ability apart from moving to a specific Uplift Stage.
