Would Axis & Allies Naval Miniatures Work for VAS?

A question for those of you who play this and have seen the A&A Naval Minis.

Do you think they would work with these rules or not, and why?

I really want to try this game, but I want to try it with minis not counters (I've got plenty of counter WWII Naval games that work just fine).

If you feel they won't work, could you give me some resources for minis that do?

Thanks all. Never tried this game yet, but think it will be my next Mongoose product to try.

I was discussing exactly this with my local store owner yesterday!
I can't see why not. The only annoying thing is you'd spend ages collecting all the ships you want and probably end up with 146 Catalina flying boats!

Im Not sure they are as suitable as all that, they may be a little large scale for some, I think some are about 6 inches long (correct me if im wrong here) so may prove awkward on small tables

there is currently a thread about which mini's to use and the most popular seem to be 1/3000, 1/6000 or 1/2400 scale from various manufacturers depending on the size of your wallet and taste for detail

theres also some detail in the useful resource thread

Personally I have some 1/3000 from Navwar

The advertised scale of the A&A WaS ship miniatures is 1:1800 (planes are at a different scale), a bit off on the more common 1:2400 and 1:2400 scales.

That sure lead to a need for a bigger gaming area, mainly if a great number of ships are involved.

But is there any scale requirements or dependencies in the VaS rules?

The rules say any scale miniatures can freely be used, but they "assume" minis of between 1/6000 and 1/2000 will be used for most battles in the game.

However the larger the mini the more awkward manoeuvering on a small table becomes. Ranges for torps and other short range stuff may also then become aesthetically wrong (eg a torp range of round about a ships length ?)

A friend of mine also looked into these. Although they look ok, the scale is way off. Also with the randomness of the packs it will cost you almsot 3 times as much to get these than to just buy what you need.

about the only advantage to the A&A minis is durability. They're cheap plastic, so you can just throw them in a box and you're done. Plus they come painted.
but yeah, you have no control over purchases, scale is way big...not for me.
