Why not just be a pirate?

Not that I'm recommending its use by anyone; just posting an idea, as it were.
Indeed. Much like I wouldn't suggest that someone should apply it too there ship, or go looking for badly defended cargo ships...

Hmm, me likey:

Beauty of my models I can repaint easily (though 'pasting' decals on curved sections is not easy)

I picked the stylised Chris Foss Pirate logos to get around using a human skull..

O..M..G! That's freakin' gorgeous!

And at first look, I felt an almost overwhelming urge to yell out, "Battle stations! All batteries, weapons free!"

FWIW, Freelance Traveller has an excellent fan-fic story posted called 'Cultural Exchange' that has a bit about starship parts and Scout Service tracking of them, and Zhodani ship parts and tracking them... it's a relatively small moment in the story (as far as entire ships go) but the tale is really quite good and has some ideas that could inform this debate...

Heh. Glad we like.

You know I could create the sort of thing you see in Aircraft books, same ship in various different camo/liveries..

'Battle Stations' perhaps thats a good idea for an action shot ?

Well, there's no real reason not to - the colour of a ship's paintjob is pretty low on the list of things that matter in terms of signature.

Of course, you then run into the abrasive properties of space dust (unless you buy into Sector Fleet's 'deflectors' or whatever they're called), so you get the fun of painting duty, Dave Lister-style.

That said, it's probably not beyond the wit of man to incorporate the colour into the outer layer of the hull material rather than a few microns of 'Dulux Void'.

You might even give it a limited effect - a suitably bad-ass paint scheme giving a +DM to Persuade checks to get the enemy to surrender?

I had an idea for that. The same way butterfly wings are colored. With nano tech it should be easy.

Or shoot first and ask questions later.
