Why not Dark Sense? It makes no sense?

Hi,

Okay I have a very simple question. Why don't trolls have Dark Sense? Why was this changed to Night Sight and Earth Sense? The process that trolls use is described in Uz: the Trolls of Glorantha as being...

"Darksense is similar to sonar; Uz 'see' objects through their own form of echolocation, generating an ultrasonic noise in their heads and receiving the echo via their sensitive dears and head bones(snip)"

This description does not fit with either Night Sight or Earth Sense, although Trolls are described as having weak vision, limited to black, white and red vision, and being excepionally farsighted. In classical RQ and all the sources I have read and in the discussion I have had with Greg, Earth Sense was a ability limited to Mostal, dwarves, and their created races. So why the change? It makes no sense and was as far as I can see not needed.

Or even the trait Echolocation.

Maybe Trolls in "Generica" have Night Sight and Earth Sense and the UZ being described in the up comming Gloranthan book will have Dark Sense/Echolocation.

To me it does not matter so much as either way they still get about in the dark.

What I think is realy strange is that Vampires don't have Vampiric Touch, and still no POW stat so no access at all to Magic Points which kind of means that can't do any magic thats not item based.

This is one of the big problems with a "generic" set of rules. You get a lot of rules that need to be changed to fit with the different worlds.

The MRQ vampire seems to be quite a weakling compared with the old RQ vampire.

SGL.

Gloranthan Trolls have Dark Sense, non-Gloranthan trolls might have Night Vision or whatever. The Monsters Book must be for non-Gloranthans, even though it claims to be for Gloranthans.

Once I realised that, I was a lot happier.

One of the many forms of Gloranthan Vampire, at that. I think that the sorcerous Vivamort vampires show up in Cults II. I'd like to see a writeup of the more draugur style vampire found amoung the Orlanthi. I think the big horror Delecti and his vampires cause in Dragon Pass is that they are sorcerous and most of the usual methods for fighting vampires work poorly excepting the use of Humakti. He used to be a soverign remedy for undeath though in MRQ he seems a bit changed.

P.S. Darksense retrofit: Yay. Similarly the elves and dwarfs may not quite match either.
