Why is NIRTON SYSTEM a Red Zone in "District 268"?

"Before the introduction of the blockade, surveys indicated that the pla-
net had once been much larger. Something had peeled the surface com-
pletely off. No information is publicly available on how or when this was
done."
GURPS Traveller, Behind the Claw, Nirton, page 76

Lots of fissionable materials on the main planet. It's interdicted by the Imperium for common development, rather than let it go in a land-grab by nearby systems.

Nice - now we have two non-canonical explanations. :D

I think we will have to wait for someone with a Mongoose Traveller
Spinward Marches book.

I don't think the Mongoose Spinward Marches book says why...

Since MJD wrote both GURPS Traveller Behind the Claw and the Mon-
goose Traveller Spinward Marches Book, there is some probability that
both books could contain the same explanation.

If the Spinward Marches book does not explain Nirton, I would still go with
Behind the Claw, which is at least canonical for one Traveller version, whi-
le the wiki entry is definitely completely non-canonical.

However, it is completely up to you - you can use or ignore canon any
way you like.

It's all made up and it's your game. Why be a slave to doctrine? Make up your own reason(s) for it and have fun. As MJD would say, roll dice and blow things up!

In mongoose's guide doesn't say anything... Ummmm, but my ship is Jump-1, so i have to go in between Walston and Datrillian, to the gas giant to refuel... I will try to convince my crew to take a slight look on the planet, we'll be ready for whatever!!!

(I need "new" money, many debts because my ship doesn't have much cargo space to deal and trade with)

Couldn't it be both?

The mantle of the planet has been blown off ... reason unknown... exposing the core which is rich in radioactives etc.

So, there is an Imperial Red Zone to prevent a landgrab (also allowing the big Megacorps first pick...) and to allow the Scouts to try and figure out what happened.

Oh AND there is a lot of rock flying around in chaotic orbits that used to be part of the mantle of the planet.

Or a giant space duck is using the planet as a nesting ground and swallows any starship that comes within 100Kkm of the surface.

Your call really.

"The world of Nirtron is Red Zoned,..."

And that's the extent of The Spinward Marches about Nirtron.

Could be dangerous conditions, the Imperium wanting to keep the word to itself, reserved for use by some nobles, creatures exist on it the Imperium wants to study without disturbing, precious resources being saved for later development. Lots of possibilities, pick a reason and go with it.

This does bring up a question I feel compelled to ask:-

Of the Red and Amber Zones in the Spinward Marches, which ones are actually given an explanation as to why they have these classifications in canon? Apart from Victoria, that is?

Oh, and Pavabid in District 268?

IIRC, radioactives tend to be concentrated in the core, and then in the crust, but not so much in the mantle. So it'd be a bit odd if it's a Mercury-like world that's lost its upper layers but still hasn't exposed its core, because you should be seeing mantle material exposed on the surface (or at least very close to it). If we're seeing the core, then it's a ridiculously huge core given it's size 6.

The following red and amber zones in The Spinward Marches have at least a mention beyond the zone (though it may just be speculation and usually isn't much).

Jewell: Esalin

Regina: Algine, Ruie, Pscias, Shionthy

Vilis: Asgard, Margesi

Lanth: Djinni, Sonthert, Victoria, Ylaven

Rylanor: 457-973, Kegena

Darrian: 494-908

Sword Worlds: Gunn, Joyeuse

Mora: Palique's

District 268: Pavabid

Five Sisters: Andor, Candory

Could you have the core of a small gas giant, which somehow lost its atmosphere?

Not really likely - gg's can't just lose atmosphere like that. It'd have to be evaporated off by a sudden (long) increase in the luminosity of the star. I dunno if it's canonical but the traveller wiki said its primary was a K4 V so there's no way for it to lose the atm with that.

Plus, a GG core wouldn't really have excess radioactives and heavy metals on the surface - it'd be a big rocky planet, so all that stuff would be more in the core.

Come on ya'll, you know what happened on Nirton, don't ya?

Well.......

Come on.....

OK, I'll tell ya'll again but try to remember this time.

Just before the Ancients' Final War where they blew up planets into asteroid fields the Ancients were using human prisoners held captive on a Venusian like world which had a insidious atmosphere to test new and improved robotic grav tractor scrapers. During an attempted prison break the guards were killed by the prisoners when they opened a door leading to the outside environment so the robots were left on. They continued to scrape and scrape and scrape until the entire crust of the planet was exposed down to the mantle beneath. Fortunately the Ancients were able to stop the robotic scrapers before they became submerged into the hot molten liquid core of the planet.

But the Ancients missed one robotic grav tractor scraper which had sunk into the mantle. Now the Imperium has placed a red zone travel code upon the planet while they attmept to recover the ancient artifact in the hope of potentially weaponizing the technology. Wont the Zhondani be terrified when they see their worlds are laid waste with this new crust scraping weapon technology.
:P

This is from the Traveller Wiki

http://traveller.wikia.com/wiki/Pavabid_(world)

Google is your friend :)

Mike
Yeah, the world that is ruled by a man in a frock and a shiny hat. :) I've actually dredged up my copy of Double Adventure 6: Divine Intervention since last I posted. That was CT's all too brief delve into Mission: Impossible territory. :)

But the other worlds I kind of know about already from the list above are:-

Jewell: Esalin - the Switzerland of the Imperium / Zhodani border. And if you imagine "Switzerland - cheese - chocolate - cuckoo clocks - Swiss bank accounts ..." ;) Say no more.

Regina: Shionthy - antimatter particles floating around. Adventure 1: The Kinunir. Got that.

Lanth: Victoria - Steampunk world. Ancient base on Albert. Oh, and they launched the Annic Nova - a TL 4 starship. :D Genius.

District 268: Pavabid - Ponce, frock, shiny hat, floaty city.

Five Sisters: Andor, Candory - Droyneworlds.
