Storming quote!
I was grasping for something with an SF link..how about

Well, there is the classic. Not so much a "why" though...

"Gully Foyle is my name,
Terra is my nation.
Deep Space is my dwelling place,
The stars, my destination."

- Alfred Bester

Some times it is the only opportunity available. (I speak from experience) you move on to the next thing and live on. I lived in Saudi Arabia for 3 and a half Years China for 5 years Iceland for two. i find it difficult to stay in the same place all my life i need to move out to feel I am making progress.

The Outward Urge is primal to our species. To see what lies over the next hill. To savour the delicacies of another culture. And, I think, it does come back to adventure...remember the byline in CT. Adventure in the Far Future. While, the cold equations of keep 'er flying, adventure does more than pay the bills. Why not everyone then? Depends upon the era that you play in. Most will play in some sort of Interstellar Era. Where luxury liners ply the stars like cruise ships do today. Some might even decide to stay a while on a resort planet. Indeed, for some it is just a job but more akin to Siberian Oil workers and their families (where in the USSR, you could 10x the pay and special perks in exchange for working in the North for six months). Given the travel times in Traveller, I would have to say 4yrs (to coincide with a term).

But, if you are asking what makes the Traveller characters unique...that is for each campaign to unravel and each will have their own motivations that accompany the Outward Urge.
