whats happening with Conan on Mongoose?

Somewhere in there Matt S says be patient, all shall be revealed in the next State of the Mongoose, which is in November. Matt seems to think that is pretty quick. Most of us think that is a long way off.

He did at least say that it is not a system change. And that Conan will never change to 4E D20. So that is something at least.

We are working on books now that will be released well into 2010 - November is practically yesterday for us :)

Can you comment upon the quality of the Thiefs Companion? Were the contents substandard? Is that why you withdrew it?

No (aside from maybe the cover, which I was never happy with). It was (temporarily) withdrawn because it made much more sense to release it at a later date, in 2010.

Right, thanks. It just seemed a sister volume to the Warriors Companion, and was advertised as such, (from what I remember). I dont suppose you would say that the Warriors Companion would have been better off if it had been held back too? Obviously, its difficult to comment not knowing the full story!

I suppose the art was an issue, for the Empires book too, it seemed.

Well, hindsight is always perfect - if you enjoyed the Warrior's Companion, then it was a good release. If not, perhaps it should have waited - who's to say? :)

Funny, I quite liked the cover art to Empires. . .

Well, youve just given me an opportunity to talk about the Warriors Companion! It was ok, a little bit thin, certainly not as awe inspiring as something like Across Thunder River. I thought the addition of permanent wounds was ok, my players wouldnt go for it though. The fluff article at the front was pretty lacklustre, being guilty, on several occasions, of using one of the worst cliches of rpg books. That is, saying something like, 'most warriors wear blue, in, fact, blue is so common a warrior colour, that few others wear it', then, the piece continues with the proviso, 'Of course, not every warrior wears blue, there are many instances where blue wouldnt be appropriate, in fact, there is a sect of monks who wear blue....', and so it goes, Im paraphrasing, of course. Mongoose arent the only ones guilty of this either.

The best part was the character section, which added a bit of colour to an otherwise, how shall I say, ok addition. The section on 'magic type' effects for warriors, I didnt like at all.

Theres nothing wrong with expansion books, extra mechanics, etc., my favourite 2nd edition book has to be the Secrets of Skelos, fantastic work, my least being, I suppose, Cities of Hyboria, a colourless, fairly useless addition. I wouldnt say that there is a gradual decline, either, dont get me wrong, I thought the bestiary and Adventures in the Hyborian Age great. Though, Cimmeria and Khitai slightly disappointing.

As far as art goes, yeah, Empires looked better than Thiefs Companion, though still not as great as Quilliams, (who, in turn, could learn from Frazetta or Windsor-Smith). The artwork is definitely of a higher quality on 1st edition covers, than on 2nd edition ones, with a few exceptions. Though I dont have a problem with any of the interior art, which I think, even though sometimes weak, is always used to good effect.

So, all in all, well done! Keep it up!

November may be yesterday to the Gods of cooll games, but to us mortals who have to clump along one day at a time, November is a long time to have to wait to find what is going to happen to the line.

It is easy to say it is going to be great, but to many of us have heard that before some pile of crap laneded on a game we really liked.

However, the goose, and Matt have been good about doing what they say, unlike others who have flat lied about what they where doing.

So I dont expect to see the line get twisted out of shape, but even an edition change is not good for me. Why buy books now if there is a new edition out next year? If there is not, then I should go ahead and keep getting stuff now. But I dont know.

And from a users point of view, that just sucks.

I know what you mean. I dont like to spray money around either. I dont have Catacombs, just waiting to see what happens. I think, even if its not major, maybe the whole thing needs a facelift anyway. 2nd edition certainly hasnt consistently hit the hights like 1st edition did (or so it seems from collecting 1st edition stuff after the event, I will admit).

2nd edition needs more Vincent Darlage penned material (which it sounds like we're getting). We had way more great Darlage books with the 1st/Atlantean editions. Comparatively the 2nd edition region books such as Cimmeria and Khitai were penned by a different writer and didn't even feel like they belonged in the Hyborian Age at all.

I am ent stuff. Just wish I had some idea of what to get, and what to wait for. With 3 kids, I dont have much of a game budget, and want to get that which will be used, and not get replaced soon.

Well, other than the Road of Kings books, none of the regional supplements have ever been given new editions. + they're much more fluff than crunch. If you want a safe bet go with one of those. Across the Thunder River, Aquilonia, Shem, Stygia are my faves.

You got that right. Amazed to see Cimmeria characterised as pseudo-Celtic nonsense with a dash of modern correctness.
