What Works? How to tote Arachnid models

Ragnarok

Mongoose
All right all you SST veterans out there/here/whereever: How to YOU tote around your Arachnids when you're off someplace for a SST game?

There are commercial carriers made of nylon with shoulder strap featuring stacked layers of foam that can be punched out to fit the models carried (Given the size of individual bugs, this could be pricey).

There are hard plastic suitcase-type carriers with the foam layers (same comment as above concerning price, plus there would be multiple suitcases to cart/keep track of).

I saw one carrying case locally made from a rifle carrying case (interesting discussions with airport security!).

I saw one Space Marine player arrive at a tournament with his entire army placed/piled/thrown in a brown corrugated box (they're hardy, those SMs!). Right now I'm thinking warriors wouldn't mind that too much; it'd be like carting around crabs in a pail.

So please enlighten me on what you have found to be most effective in transporting your Arachnids (I didn't say "bugs" because my answer to that would be vials, small jars, etc.). Thanks!

I found some fishing tackle boxes that work well for my SST collection. The top has an open area for the Marauders and such, with the small "lure" boxes working to store my MI. On several, I removed the tackle boxes for the Warrior Bug model, using foam to separate the second layer.

I have done a similar thing for my 40k Tyranids, although I used a tool box rather than a fishing box (never considered fishing box to be honest) but bought a fairly large tool box (looks about 1.5-2X larger than the pictured box for £10), put a layer of foam in the bottem then just lie as many models as will fit then put down a couple of cm of bubble wrap (this requires constant guarding from other gamers *GRRR*) and another layer of bugs and so on and so forth untill the box is full. I would recomened trying to get some convoluted foam (the stuff with hills and valleys) for the bottom layer as it will hold the figures better.

I wouldn't worry to much about the bugs as my mates seem to be incredibly resilient to damage (far more so than my beeping nids), he just carefully stacks them in the army box he got them in, and has a seperate box for his tanker (hasn't brought his plasma bug round yet), none have suffered any damage so far.

Hahahaha

I was thinking of having little labels on the areas with latin names for the bugs that go there

Bingo on that. Hey, to get you started see the "Know your Foe" on page 46 (both soft and hard cover versions of 1st ed.). That will get you started, lol.

Gauntlet, the only thing missing in that pic is a large pin stuck in the middle of each "sample".

Not pins, big bloody nails is that i think is needed   8)

Actually the Arachnid Warriors hook their pretty legs very well... You can basically create these repulsive carpets of arachnids by just planting the Warriors so that their legs cross over eachother... They stay very well together...

I usually pack my Warriors around in that formation inside the original V1. box... with all the literally heavy hitters either going into one of my army transports (if they are metal) or into cushioned Plasma Bug boxes that can take any plastic Arachnid bug in all of its glory...

I went for an army footlocker (father's from Vietnam) and added a pullout tray on top. The tray has ornament dividers in it so that 40+ warriors will fit in it. 2 per section works well, you don't get the tangle-o-bugs problem.

The bottom of the footlocker holds the rest of my bugs/books in Army Transport foam.

Then my MI are in my army transport.

I just started building all the bugs and began to wonder: How the heck am I gonna carry these?

Beutiful models, just awkward to find a ready carrying solution.

I just thought of something: I have a few Dell server boxes lying around the office, I may grab one and use the packaging to tote these babies.

I also added wheels to the bottom of the footlocker and a rope to tow it with. Since I also demonstrate SST for Mongoose, I bring my terrain also. That adds a large box and tote to my "load". With bungie cords, it's not too bad to haul everything. Jason Coleman and I found that Escalators aren't fun with the battle wagon. :)

It does beat the plastic tote with tiny plastic wheels that I used the year before. It suffered a wheel lost at Origins and two more at Gencon. We ended up dragging the thing back to the truck with only one wheel. It was zig-zagging the whole way. That was when I decided to go with the footlocker. :)

Rather heavy..... thats gonna kill if you have to carry it far or up and down stairs lots.

I wouldn't be too worried about it, my mates bugs just travel in the original Starship troopers war game box with no padding and they ain't been damaged.

Not that heavy to me. I may use a box the 2950 came in. Thats half the weight that the older 2600's came in....

It's not like you're using the actual Server Rack :)

Well.....

I actually am in the market for another Raq. The two we have are now full. I'd like to get an airconditioned cabinet like we had at the bank....
