What to buy to get started?

I want to get into the game but what am I going to have to buy to get started? Should I get the revised box for the counters or will I be ok just getting the sky full of stars counter sheet? Does the revised edition have some scenerios in it or should I skip buying it all together? I tried doing a search a few times for different things but never came up with exactly what I was looking for to answer my questions I have.

I know I will need to purchase the 2nd edition rules and fleet books. Also would it be good to pick up the starter pack since it has a few Centauri vs Narn scenerios in it? I have played other games before so I am not new to gaming. I have Federation Commander, Star Wars star warriors, Battletech and some other games. I just really need a friendly push in the right direction as to what to purchase before trying to buy mini's. I have no problems at all using counters as thats what you use in Federation Commander. Any advice would be great thanks.

I wouldn't buy anything except the 2nd edition rules and Fleet books and the Sky Full of Stars Counter pack. That will get you going. If I remember correctly the Sky Full of Stars Counter pack has less of somethings, but more of others. I also believe some of the counters in the boxed set are not numbered, so it makes tracking which ships are which problematic when you have multiples of the same ship. If you can get the boxed set cheap, it wouldn't be a bad investment if you want extra counters and plan to get the Sky Full of Stars Counter pack.

Then you need to try and find miniatures if you want to go that route. As Mongoose is no longer producing the miniatures, you'll have a difficult time finding them, but there are vendors that still have product.

You need the 2nd Edition rulebook and fleetbook, there the latest.
Then choose the sfos counter pack.

The SFOS counter pack has everything in the Revised box counter pack and a few sheets more.

Thanks guys. I just figured the revised set would have some scenerios in it and different types of counters. I am glad I posted here before I started to get stuff.

I am actually going to make a trade to someone. What is a call to arms counters? I am also getting a turning template is that just for mini's or can you use them with the counters as well?

Since the Revised set is not needed I will leave it out of the trade. I am not worried to much about buying mini's as I am not really good at painting or putting models together. I just want to try it out for gaming purposes because I like playing different kinds of games. If I really like the game I may try to get some mini's and put them together not sure.

The show was great. I seen the game about 6 months ago and have been thinking of getting it since then. I have been lurking here for a few months and reading posts.

You don't need the Starter book either. The 2nd edition hardbacks supercede that.

Any scenarios in the Revised Box or Starter Set is outdated now and may or may not be balanced. You have everything you need to play in the 2nd ed. Rulebook, 2nd ed. Fleet Lists Book and the counter pack. The turning template works well with counters too and other than some dice and a tape measure, the only thing you could really go for then would be some miniatures.

There are also several fan-made packs (check the resources area of the forum at the top of the ACtA page) that can provide scenarios and extra ships.
