What is the Traveller system called?

First of all, there needs to be a huge enough market out there for a 2D6 mechanic like there is for a D20 mechanic. Then (assuming Mongoose Traveller is the #1 selling 2D6 game ever and still is) other games using 2D6 need to pound into every customer that it is a Mongoose work-alike game/module whatever. And keep pounding that drum daily for every gamer to know that the Mongoose brand and 2D6 are a couple.

For now, hardly anyone knows what mechanic Mongoose Traveller uses. Most players (95%+) that are told about Mongoose want to know if it is D&D. And even if they did know that it is a 2D6 thing, it's not a D20 thing.

Thankfully, there are players that have stopped playing D20 games. They'll buy Mongoose Traveller in a heartbeat if they are told about it. Not so much because of it being 2D6. But because it is not a D20 game, and they want to role-play in a sci-fi setting for a change.

Can anyone call the game 2d6 do all of that?

I dunno, nobody's tried. You seem to think it's impossible.

Maybe being 'bigger than the original' isn't the point though - maybe 'providing an alternative on a less restrictive license' is the point. That's what happens with open content - it can be used for purposes other than what the publishers intended.

Do you know who fits the basic structure of that (with variations): Mongoose.

People didn't get into MGT because T5 was delayed - very few people actually cared about T5 in the first place. MGT succeeded because (a) they were the new licensee when QLI lost the license, (b) they came to an agreement with FFE to shut down all competing versions of the game, and (c) they have the resources to develop the property (even if their artwork, layout, and editing ranges from the amateurish to the incompetent).

To use your somewhat strained analogy, Mongoose got in the way of a stroller, not a car or a semi. T5 isn't relevant to anything here.

Hum..... A name for Traveller the rules mechanics.....

Well for a While is a small group the term 8+ was used to discribe the core CT mechanic. It also works well for the Mongoose edition. Note there are a plethora of games out there that use 2d6 for resolution which is why that doesn't work.....

Now when I say Traveller I mean the whole constellation of Traveller related products and games with specifically including or excluding the 3rd imperium and all its settings.
