I have been searching for a good while for a decent Wild West based RPG. I think it could work based on the RQ system.

Mongoose did a Wild West D20 RPG, OGL Wild West, but I get the feeling youspecifically want an RQ based one.

I tried the demo for Aces and Eights, at Gencon, allegedly ran by one of the writers of the game and either that was a lie or the guy didnt know what he was doing. It was way too charty and bogged down very fast. Must say I did go in to the game hoping I had found my western rpg but came away disappointed.

No offense to MGP, but I consider Aces & Eights to be the definitive wild west game.

I would agree completely.

A&E is a beautiful core book of the highest quality inside and out. One of my favorite aspects is how so many skills have their own "mini-game" of procedural rolls and tables to determine detailed results. Very much in the same vein as how Traveller handles character generation or system building.

You can still resolve skills with a simple roll but the systems for mini-gaming things like a cattle drive are really innovative and can allow for some solo gaming potential.

This does sound interesting, and I'll be on the lookout for it.

Other thoughts:
1. I have a pile of Western RPGs on my shelf, and I agree that none of them so far seems like the Western RPG for me, yet.

2. OGL Wild West is a decent enough game but I'm not convinced that d20 is the answer to all genres and I'm not sure it fits the Wild West as much. (I have several other d20-based Western games and they don't grab me, either.) Also, I was disappointed in the B&W fomat, which just wasn't as cool as OGL Horror or OGL Ancients which were beautiful books in color.

3. Aces & Eights is certainly beautiful, but it is very rules-heavy and seems to be a tad anti to the fast-paced gunfight style of a Western game.

4. My favorite Western game of all time is still Boot Hill from 1975. It's simple and quick to generate new characters when the old ones die in battle.

Bottom line is that I'd love to see a good Western RPG. Maybe RQ would be a good fit, maybe not. :?

Hate to sound broken record but whatabout traveller? Incidentally Traveller Western has been something I have been considering for a while as potential adaptation for doing. Dunno. Maybe there's better ideas but I just love traveller rules which are very flexible and have that lovely character generation rules so I'm constantly thinking where it could be adapted(ATM list is: Sword&sorcery, high magic fantasy, western, warhammer 40k and modern era for starters. Maybe either some cold war era based RPG or maybe some special team goodyness).

I still maintain that Mongoose should try to get the license for Cold Steel Reign. I have the players book for it and the background rocks. Its a bit like Dark Tower and Jon Shannow, like a darker, grimier Deadlands.
There seem to be a few supernatural critters but loads of mutated things. There does seem to be some sort of entity which has come to earth in the meteor which struck the earth on the third day at Gettysburg and brought the timeline we know crashing to a halt.

"The world lies broken and cast in ruins. Humanity has been left staggering and sore, choking in the dusts of time, struggling to survive against a backdrop of religious war and black rains. This is a shattered world, one thats been thrown back on itself at the height of the Civil war and left smoldering in a dark age from which it may never rise. It's a turned world of six-shooters and superstition, walking fears, waking nightmares and sudden death. A world of cracked leather and gunsmoke, wasteland and dust. A world where vile machines stir to life with steam power born of blood, where medicine men drug themselves into dreams of tomorrow and pale skinned beasts stalk in the mists. Here, Baronies war over water and trade routes,Gunslingers ride in the shadows and bullets buy whiskey quicker than gold....This is a world torn in the grip of a Cold Steel Reign."

As far as I know, the GM's guide was virtully complete but was never released. It's not everybody's cup O' tea but I reckon that it rocks. Gunslinging Templar orders. 8)

The Traveller rules might make a good Western game. There are lots of gun skills. You could trim down the space skills and replace them or delete them.

Gamblers, Gunfighters etc could easily get their own careers.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Deadlands yet as the greatest Wild West game ever.
Deadlands isn't Wild West....its the Weird West.

Yeah, easy to leave the weird bit out though. If youre playing Wild West, the game needs poker chips and a deck of cards, how cool is that?

Aces and Eights looks great but I find it soooo cumbersome to play. The Shot Clock idea is super but really needs to be simplified I think. I find BRP works pretty well for wild west settings.
