Vorlons/Earth alliance/minbari?

So i've started collecting some vorlon miniatures and am thinking they'll be fun although probably not so hot at lower PL games, but im also considering getting minbari and earth alliance. I'd be interested in peoples opinions of them, particularly earth alliance crusade era.

any insights would be greatly appreciated :D

Minbari are pretty similar in style (although rely on a different defence method) to the Vorlons. They are in general, however, faster and more manoeuvrable. They also have an 'assault' element to their fleet, with the Tigara, Troligan and Torotha. They also hold up better at the lower PLs, but are again very top heavy.

EA really depends on the era you are collecting, although most of the ships are available for use in 2 of them. They are a very versatile fleet as a result. General strengths include fighters and interceptors/anti-fighter. Their weaponry is also designed for all round coverage. Their main drawback is they are not a particularly manoeuvrable fleet, until you get into the Crusade era. Again, the Crusade era starts getting top heavy in terms of PLs.

If your looking for the opposite end of the spectrum, you can't go wrong with Early Years EA. Only 1 ships is battle and above, the Orestes. The main bulk of the fleet is in the Raid and Skirmish PLs, and has the most extensive luist variants of all the EA lists. Be warned though, with few exceptions, EA ships in that era are specialist designs, good at one thing and usually little else. Take the right mix of ships and use them for their strenghts and you can do very well indeed; take ships willy-nilly and use them outside of the scope of the purpose and they'll look very pretty as their buyrning hulks drift across the stars.

Interesting, because I too have an early EA box set and I'm completing my Minbari fleet (I'm doing the entire Earth/ Minbari War stuff).

Anywhoo, here is what I'm planning to field for a 5 Battle, Early Earth Alliance fleet:

2 Orestes
2 Hyperion (Rail v)
2 Nova
2 Sagittarius
1 Oracle
4 Tethys (missile v)

As you have said, you need to balance the ships out, because they need to specialize for their roll. I see the Tethys and Oracle to be the initial movement sinks and the 2 Sagittarius ships to volley in their shots from long range. Meanwhile the Nova and Hyperion ships will try to get in, close and personal. The final movers will be my Orestes ships, who will try to line up their bore-sights and do the REAL damage before getting too close for that sort of game (at which point, they'll do fine with all their AD).

Is this too much theory, or am I on the right track?

Love My Crusaders EA. Good fleet if you can find people who dont mind playing at a higher Priority lvl. (Thats where all the really cool ships are at.) However i have found that the Myrmidon adn teh Hyperion and the Chronos are Great fun for Crusade era fleets and if employed properly Do very well for themselves. As for teh Vorlns, I know in my game club I cant find many people who will play them or shadows (Who I have) Unless they have ancients or the other race (Shadows or vorlons). People see them as overpowered and unfair to play against some of teh other cannon races. We generally use them for a special type of game.

not sure that i'd concider vorlons/shadows overpowered....yes they only have beam weapons and are tough but they both appear to have their disadvantages....both only have one fire arc and not that many dice of attacks although they are all dd/tr/qd. once a vorlons enemies are outta arc its doubtful they'll get back in arc. and shadows...well fighters should do okay against them since they can't deal with fighters effectivly.

but i'll have a better feel for them once i get some more games under my belt......gonna start playing fairly regularly with my friend soon. He's looking to get Vree, which look like a fun fleet. love their heavy fighters :)

was dubious about ACTA at first....since i was playing B5Wars but its shaping up to be a really fun game to play larger fleet engagements....and the campaign rules look easy and likly to make for fun campaigns.
